xDrive: Without BMW’s AWD system, M240i would be somewhat wayward. As it is, even in the sportiest of modes, the wheels go where you want them to.
Engine: the straight 6 has that familiar BMW howl, and the twin turbos get it moving, without feeling brutish. The 285kw/500Nm output gets to 100 in 4.7 seconds.
Transmission: the 8-speed Steptronic is mild mannered much of the time, only getting snappy when sportier modes are used.
Fuel consumption: 8.0L/100k is brilliant for this kind of performance. The fuel tank is only 52L, so range is somewhat bijou. Having said that, with a full tank I had a range of 375km at the point of collection, and halfway through the week have used 1/3 of a tank, yet the range is now 400km. whoever had it before me gave it a right royal thrashing. The CO2 is 185g/k, and to top it all off, will run on 91RON, so can drink the cheap stuff.

Comfort is impressive. The cabin is tight without being oppressive. Seats are firm, but adjustment in bolsters and “front of cushion” make sure they’re supportive. Seat heating is therapeutic on longer trips.
Sound: the exhaust is subtle, even when pushed. Sure, there is a howl, but a subdued one.
Ride: on most surfaces, BMW has done an exceptional job with the active damping in comfort mode. Even Sport+ doesn’t shake you to the bone. Double joint spring strut front suspension, with 5-link at the rear, sacrifices none of the handling for that luscious cruise experience.
The badge. No matter what, there is little substitute for the blue and white roundel.
Technology. Much of what you feel is down to the way the M240i is put together, but the way it all works is the design and technology. The engine, the materials, and quality manufacture uses fine tolerances, and thorough testing, to reach moting nirvana. What your paying for is under the skin where it counts.
The Drive. If a BMW drives like rubbish, it isn’t really a BMW. The M240i is as tight as a drum, yet as nimble as an elk. In many ways it isn’t about the outright sprint or the way it goes round corners, it is about an experience you can’t have any other way. BMW is not just selling you a car, it is providing a lifestyle.
