Top 13 Things Gay Men Need for Their Road Trip

You’re heading on your road trip and whether you’re solo, 2-up, or more, there are things you can’t leave home without. Here is our Top 13 list

1 Fast charger:

There are a bunch of fast charging options. Sure, you can keep your phone on the Qi charger if you have one, but you might want to pump the power into a camera for example. Either way, we found this one on Amazon: SCOSCHE CPDCA38 PowerVolt 38W

Many people don’t know that car USB will take ages, so amp up your holiday fun. Get 2, make a day of it!

NOTE- Make sure you take several cables in case, in an emergency, you can’t find USB-3 and have to use USB-C

2 Pillows:

A couple of comfy pillows will make unscheduled pit stops less taxing. Leaving drool on the window makes you look very unattractive. Ikea has reasonably priced feather pillows for that deluxe experience.

3 Blanket:

To go with the pillows. Blankets also cover no end of misdemeanours while you’re parked up in a rest area. We like the lightweight of IKEA bedspreads. We pack the blanket and 2 pillows together into a Samsonite Rewind 55cm Duffle Bag

duffle.

4 Sun block:

You live in Australia people. Harden the fuck up. Wearing sunblock is far cooler than getting the beejesus burnt out of you.

5 GPS

Take a GPS unit of some kind. If your car doesn’t have navigation, use your Apple CarPlay/Android Auto to stream your maps to the infotainment system. If you have neither CarPlay or navigation, get a windscreen mount for your phone, or a dedicated navigation unit like the Navman GPS we review recently.

6 Lube:

If you’re going to get into it on the road, don’t use spit. Eventually you’ll take skin off, and I speak from bitter experience. Lube should be a permanent fixture on the end of your hand. Alone, or with some friends, never forget your lube.

7 Snacks:

Take a couple of sturdy bags, one for snacks and one for rubbish. While stopping and roadside all-in-one truck stops can be fun, for a whole lot of reasons, you never know what can happen in-between. I take some water bottles filled from home filters. I loathe leaving plastic in bins when I don’t have to.

8 Water:

Have an ample supply. Water has no end of use, apart from drinking. See LUBE section above.

9 A towel:

It seems less obvious, especially if you’re going to stay with friends at the other end. Remember, anything can happen so be prepared. If your trip is uneventful, you can dry off after washing off the lube, at the very least. You’ll have a wetpack in your bags, so keep it where you can get it easily.

10 Car Checks:

Fill/Charge the car before you get on the road. If you’re in a petrol/diesel car, make sure it is serviced. Check your fluids and tyres.

11 Let someone know your plans:

Let a couple of friends know what you’re doing. When I do a long drive, I usually call a couple of people, while on the road. Not only does it help pass the time but it is a great idea for others to know where you are.

12 Pen and paper:

Just in case.

13 Movies, TV and Music:

I take a USB with videos in case I get stuck. My clever Sandisc drive plugs into the PC at home, and into the iPhone when out and about. Best of all, you can play video straight from the USB stick via the APP without having to give the iPhone big hugs every 5 minutes. I’ve got a couple of these and they’ve proved invaluable. Files are easily moved too, and you don’t need iTunes to do it.

If you’re in 5G or 4G, you could stream with your favourite streaming service. We use PLEX which allows us to watch our home-stored videos while we were out of the house.
