Toyota has dusted off the Land Cruiser FJ, shrinking it down to something more RAV4 than Wrangler—but don’t let the size fool you, it’s still meant to get dirty where other cars fear to tread. The Japan launch is set for mid-2026, with the FJ debuting at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo from October 30 to November 9.

This is a retro-meets-modern beast, paying homage to the 1951 BJ that famously conquered Mt. Fuji’s sixth station. Seven decades and 12 million sales later, Toyota says the FJ still embodies “Freedom & Joy”, though now in a slightly more compact, Instagram-friendly package.

Small But Mighty…ish
Yes, it’s smaller than the old FJ Cruiser, roughly RAV4-sized, but Toyota insists it’s tougher, more agile, and off-road ready. Petrol-only, however, and — sorry Aussie adventurers — it’s not coming Down Under. Rumour has it Toyota boffins are tinkering, but let’s face it: Aussies love diesel, and that’s probably why the old FJ Cruiser got the chop.

Design & Quirk Factor:
Round headlights tip a hat to past FJs. Removable bumpers and MOLLE panels let you slap on your gear or swap damaged bits after an off-road “oops.” Inside, a horizontal dashboard, neat switches, and a low-set cowl keep your eyes on the adventure. Toyota Safety Sense keeps things boringly safe, but don’t worry—the FJ still wants to play.

Off-Road Fun:
The FJ’s wheelbase is 2,580mm (shorter than the 250 Series), giving it a tight 5.5m turning radius. Underbody braces and chassis rigidity mean it can handle trails that would embarrass a Corolla Cross, and wheel articulation rivals the 70 Series.

Customization & Toys:
Toyota promises sequential accessories to make your FJ uniquely yours. Need to haul gear? MOLLE panels. Want to toy with an EV sidekick? Meet the Land Hopper, a small electric mobility concept still in development.

US Prototype Specs:

  • Length: 4,575 mm | Width: 1,855 mm | Height: 1,960 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,580 mm | Seats: 5 | Engine: 2.7L petrol 2TR-FE
  • Power: 163 PS | Torque: 246 N·m | 6-speed Super ECT | Part-time 4WD

Bottom line: Tiny, retro, petrol-only, and not for Aussies. But for anyone else craving compact Land Cruiser toughness with a playful edge, the FJ is here to remind the world Toyota still knows how to have fun off-road.
