Australia’s Most Powerful and Luxurious Electric SUV, the Volvo EX90, In Detail

Following the success of their EV range, Volvo Car Australia has pulled back the curtain on its flagship electric SUV, the EX90. The large SUV is not only spacious and classy, but it is fast and powerful. With three rows of seats, an arsenal of cutting-edge safety features, and a mammoth battery pack, the EX90 is here to take on the premium electric SUV market.

Power, Performance, and Range

The EX90 doesn’t mess around when it comes to power. Two variants are on offer: the EX90 Plus Twin Motor, producing 300kW and 770Nm, with a 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds; and the EX90 Ultra Twin Motor Performance, delivering an eye-watering 380kW and 910Nm, slashing the sprint to just 4.9 seconds. Both versions come with a massive 111kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery, providing a driving range of up to 570km. And when it’s time to juice up, a DC fast charger can take the battery from 10-80% in just 30 minutes. An 11kW AC charger is included as standard, ensuring convenient at-home charging options.

The EX90’s dual-motor setup sends power to all four wheels via a single-speed transmission, ensuring seamless acceleration and control. With an electronically limited top speed of 180km/h, this SUV delivers the kind of smooth, effortless performance that electric vehicles are known for. Even more impressive is its towing capability—up to 2200kg—making it a practical choice for those who need power as well as luxury.

Safety That Thinks for Itself

Volvo’s calling this its safest car ever, and they’ve got the tech to back it up. The EX90 is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, including cameras, radars, and LiDAR, all feeding into high-performance core computers powered by NVIDIA DRIVE. This real-time 360-degree safety ‘shield’ can detect small objects hundreds of metres ahead, enhancing Volvo’s Pilot Assist system with lane-change steering support.

Inside the cabin, sensors and AI-driven technology keep an eye on the driver’s alertness, detecting signs of distraction or drowsiness. If needed, the system can intervene to ensure safer driving. The EX90 also integrates advanced collision avoidance and mitigation systems, setting new standards for vehicle safety.

Scandi-Luxe Interior & High-Tech Features

Inside, the EX90 stays true to Volvo’s minimalist, Scandinavian design ethos. Plush Nordico upholstery, crafted from sustainable materials, adds a luxurious yet eco-friendly touch. A full-width panoramic glass roof enhances the feeling of space and allows just five percent of UV rays through, keeping the cabin cool and comfortable. The driver-centric cockpit features a 14.5-inch centre touchscreen with Google built-in, offering seamless access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play store. Wireless Apple CarPlay is also included for those who prefer iOS connectivity.

Audiophiles will be thrilled by the Bowers & Wilkins 25-speaker sound system, delivering 3D surround sound akin to a concert hall. The audio system is seamlessly integrated into the car’s design, with speakers embedded into the headrests for an immersive experience. And forget fumbling for keys—the EX90’s phone key technology automatically unlocks the car as you approach, loading your personal driver profile and welcoming you with a personalised lighting and climate control sequence.

Sustainable Luxury

Volvo continues its commitment to sustainability with the EX90, which is constructed using high levels of recycled materials, including sustainably sourced wood trim and recycled plastics. The upholstery is made from Nordico, a material derived from bio-based and recycled components, setting a new benchmark for luxury without compromise.

With a towing capacity of 2200kg, a 180km/h top speed, and enough luxury and safety tech to make a private jet jealous, the EX90 is Volvo’s boldest electric statement yet. Expect to see these silent beasts cruising Australian streets soon, redefining what it means to drive electric.
