Volvo has introduced the new XC70, its first long-range plug-in hybrid SUV. The model delivers more than 200km of electric driving under the CLTC cycle, the longest EV-only range of any Volvo plug-in hybrid to date.
Volvo Expands Hybrid Focus
Engineers developed the XC70 on the Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), a platform designed for long-range plug-in hybrids. The SUV enters the lineup as Volvo recalibrates its electrification strategy.
The company previously pledged to sell only fully electric vehicles by 2030 but recently stepped back from that target. Volvo now aims for 90–100 percent of sales to come from electrified models by the end of the decade, leaving scope for mild hybrids to remain in production. CEO Jim Rowan said Volvo will remain pragmatic while still targeting full electrification and net-zero emissions by 2040.
Former CEO Håkan Samuelsson described the XC70 as “a cornerstone” of the electrified portfolio and a bridge for drivers who want electric capability without committing to a full EV. Volvo opened pre-orders for the model in China and confirmed that European sales will follow.

Range and Charging
The XC70 covers everyday commutes on battery power alone and extends travel with a combined range of more than 1,200km. Drivers can fast-charge the SUV from zero to 80 percent in 23 minutes.
Volvo equipped the XC70 with bi-directional charging, which allows the battery to supply power to external devices. Owners can run camping gear, small appliances, or electronics directly from the vehicle.
Design Details
Designers gave the XC70 a modern Scandinavian profile with sculpted body lines, a tapering roof, and a defined shoulder. The closed shield-style grille links the SUV to Volvo’s electric range, while an active shutter regulates airflow to balance aerodynamics, cooling, and cabin comfort.
At the rear, vertical C-shaped tail lamps integrate into the glass, producing a clean, functional look. Large wheels and a raised ride height emphasise the vehicle’s SUV stance.
Interior Layout and Tech
The cabin features a minimalist Scandinavian style with high-grade materials and integrated storage. Volvo tuned the audio system to match the cabin’s acoustics.
Drivers use a 12.3-inch digital instrument display alongside a 15.4-inch horizontal centre screen. The format shows large navigation maps and leaves space for other functions. Buyers can add a 92-inch augmented reality head-up display for expanded driver information.
The XC70 runs an AI-enabled voice assistant, updates itself with over-the-air software, and supports remote functions such as cabin pre-conditioning through the Volvo Cars app.
Safety Technology
Volvo fitted the XC70 with its Safe Space Technology suite. The system uses radars, cameras, and sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings and step in to help avoid or mitigate collisions.
Engineers added a door-opening alert that warns occupants before stepping into the path of a cyclist or pedestrian. Driver-assist functions include automatic lane-change support, Park Pilot Assist, and active navigation guidance.
Market Outlook
Volvo has started production of the XC70 and opened pre-orders in China. European markets will follow, though the company has not confirmed Australian timing.
The XC70 arrives at a critical moment for Volvo. The model expands the company’s plug-in hybrid range just as leadership moderates the timeline for a full EV shift. By combining extended EV driving with the flexibility of a petrol engine, the XC70 reflects Volvo’s adjusted approach: electrified vehicles for today’s market, with fully electric models still positioned as the long-term goal.
