Luke and Travis report-

It is beyond comprehension that rear-wheel-drive sports cars are facing the grim reality of the passenger car to SUV revolution, to say nothing of the march of EV-dom. Toyota’s GR 86 joins the GR team, but the passing of the ICE is inevitable. Meanwhile, the GR 86 parks itself in the hearts drivers who fancy themselves as rebels. They firmly say, ”NO” to SUVs, and good for them.

Travis and I gently backed the GR 86 out of its compound with neither of us being convinced that the new car could be as good as the one it replaced, but we were wrong.

Toyota cleverly kept the good bits of the old car, gave it a tad more power, and put a few modern additions in the cabin, which still remains a basic affair. Shorter peeps like me can jump in and out with the grace of a gazelle, but watching Trav get on board was like watching someone trying to put toothpaste back into the tube. He has very long legs that seem to wrap themselves around the sides of the cockpit.

ABOVE: 2023 Toyota GR 86

Despite tall Trav filling the driver’s seat to perfection, gear changes were a little choppy to begin with. The driver change, halfway to The Cottages, saw a smoother result.

The 173kw engine and its light, smooth, 6 speed manual feel perky, yet despite the light 1300-ish KG weight, doesn’t feel particularly fast. Toyota says GR 86 is fiery, but fanning the embers into a forest fire is going to take some doing. Instead of over promising and under-delivering, I’d describe the drive as thoroughly rewarding and is the sort of car you’d drive to the shops even if the shops are a block away. It’s great for single or couples, a weekend car, or for “chaps’n’chicks of a certain age”, as my sainted great aunty Ag used to say. She never had much time for men, but her best mate Vi was a jolly good card player and mixed a mean rum n coke. The ladies were born in 1900 and i imagine had they been in their 20’s now, would be heading LGBTIQ+ marches with bells on; but i digress.

GR 86 feels tighter in the corners, but the firm suspension is unforgiving on the highway, and the cabin is noisy at speed. That all melts away in the bends, which blend themselves together in the same way as my favourite driving song: Lash – Take Me Away (see Above).

A rear-wheel-drive car is the duck’s nuts, and, the boot still claims the fame of coping with a full set of 4 wheels. With the seats down, drive to the track, whip ‘em on, and go for your life.

Is GR 86 different to its BRZ sister? Yes, but not so much that you’d notice. The reason GR 86 has a space in my heart is that its fun is built in, and no matter how long you have it, it will still make you smile.
