Yackandandah The tiny Town That could, and Did

Great Driving Roads in Australia are plentiful, but only if you dare to venture beyond the bounds of the large capitals. Hyundai’s recent IONIQ 6 launch took in the border country and the pretty landscape therein.

One such town, Yackandandah, sits amongst rolling hills in such bucolic beauty as to be almost criminal.

The town has gained some considerable note as being the centre of the Indigo Shire project, appropriately named Totally Renewable Yackandandah, or TRY for short. The village of less than 2,000 has come together in many community projects: restoring a burnt-out museum, creating the Yackandandah Folk Festival, and starting a community-owned petrol station. That brings us back to TRY. Their ambition knows no bounds, with renewable energy and climate change providing a very real commercial opportunity.

You’d have thought that alone would appeal to city people to apply this thinking to their own micro grids. Why doesn’t every city apartment tower have a local battery built into the price? The YAK proves it can be done with appropriate motivation.

But, i digress: The synergy between the beautiful village, its determined residents, and a forward-thinking utility provider has created a new way to think of power, generation, storage, and usage. With the help of AusNet Services’ subsidiary, Mondo, a swift change has occurred.

This synergy  brought into being 3 mirco-grids. This network of buildings uses rooftop solar and batteries, a community power retailer, Indigo Power, and a large community battery, with a second battery planned. Yak 1 is a community battery on the grounds of a local landowner, and was helped by the use of a transformer once part of the family saw mill.

Yackandandah is a beautiful village well worth a look. The Star Hotel does a mean smoked meat offering. The high street is a cornucopia of pride and time-worn patina that is endearing, and its charm cannot be faked.

The road conditions vary so take care, but you will not find better, no matter how far you travel. a quick glance of the map shows other spots in the Indigo Shire worth stopping at, as well as a wealth of terrifically-twisty ribbons of blacky goodness to enjoy. Why not spread the love and stay in a local pub overnight?

We can’t thank the town enough for making us feel so welcome.
