19 YO Joseph Loake's Aston Martin F1 Dream Come True

It’s not every day a young driver gets to step into the big leagues, but that’s exactly what happened for 19-year-old British racer Joseph Loake. As the winner of last year’s Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award (AMABA), Joseph earned himself a golden ticket—a test drive in the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team car. And boy, did he make it count!

On a sunny Wednesday, 21 August, Joseph rolled up to Silverstone’s iconic Grand Prix circuit, ready to take on the challenge of piloting the Aston Martin AMR22, a beast of a machine that legends like Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll tore up tracks with during the 2022 F1 season. With nerves of steel and a youthful grin, Joseph embarked on his first-ever experience behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, and he didn’t disappoint.

The day kicked off with a few installation laps on the famous 3.66-mile track, which is conveniently just a stone’s throw from the AMR Technology Campus. After getting a feel for the circuit, Joseph was let loose for a series of runs on slick tyres, completing more than 225km in dry conditions. The lad was flying, trying out both hard and soft-compound Pirelli tyres across four runs, all while handling the AMR22’s monstrous 1.6-litre V6 engine and its twin-energy hybrid system that churns out a whopping 1000bhp.

Reflecting on his incredible day, Joseph said, “It’s been incredible. I knew it was going to be faster than anything I’d driven, but the grip and speed through the fast turns were absolutely astonishing—a whole level above anything I could have imagined.” For Joseph, the whole experience was a dream come true, from seeing his name on the halo to feeling the car respond to every tiny adjustment he made. “The Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team AMR22 is incredible. I’ve never known a car to be so responsive to every steering adjustment, every dab of throttle. It’s the most compliant car I’ve ever driven, and that gives you confidence to push.”

The data, the support from the team, and the sheer thrill of driving an F1 car all left Joseph buzzing with excitement. “Off-track, the depth of data available is like nothing I’ve experienced, and I’ll definitely be able to use some of the things I learnt to improve my driving for the rest of the season in F3. It was a really cool day, and I’m pleased to say I left nothing on the table.”

Joseph’s test drive wasn’t just about having fun, though. It was the result of hard work and proving himself against tough competition. He clinched this opportunity after beating three other pre-selected rivals in a rigorous two-day assessment at Silverstone last year, driving various machines, including an Aston Martin Vantage GT3. Along with the F1 test, he also took home a cool £200,000, full British Racing Drivers’ Club membership, an Arai helmet, and a snazzy Jordan Bespoke personalised helmet bag. Not too shabby for a day’s work!

Robert Sattler, F1 Evolution Programme Director at AMF1 Team, was full of praise for the young talent. “Joseph did a very good job on his first time driving a Formula 1 car. It’s a big step up from what he’s used to in Formula 3, but he dealt with everything extremely professionally and made a very good impression on the team with his attitude. Joseph settled in well and asked a lot of pertinent questions. It’s one thing to listen to the engineers after each run, but to take on board their feedback and translate it into what they do on-track really shows a young driver’s potential, and Joseph did this very well.”

With his performance at Silverstone, Joseph Loake has shown he’s got what it takes to go far in the world of motorsport. The future looks bright for this young driver, and we can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next.
