2022 Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior by Premcar – REVIEW

Navara is getting in in years, but still looks the business. The handsome exterior of the Navara Pro-4X Warrior has exclusive decals that signify something special lurking beneath.

Premcar is a Melbourne-based company that transformed Nissan’s Navara into an off-road mega-beast.

Pro-4X is the top Navara that is already off-road focused, but Premcar adds toughened skid plates to protect the underbody from rocks ripping into the cabin. The standard camera helps drivers avoid the in the first place, but sometimes shit happens.

Inside:

The cabin feels fairly spacious, but never far from its industrial roots.

Gormless apprentices are confined to the rear seats where space is less than what you’d imagine. Most important to a pick-up is the tray, and any increase there is a decrease in the rear seats.

Seats are leather, but there is no heating, even in the front. No problem, wear a flanny and Bob’s your uncle. Besides, dual zone climate control keeps things toasty. Should you get really dirty, a couple of rubber mats can be had.

Navigation, and a camera system displays on the 8” central tablet with other controls familiar to Navara drivers.

The 7-speed auto lever and manual brake handle sit on the centre console, and although there is nothing flash, the interior feels totally functional, yet roomy and comfortable.

The Drive:

There is a certain something about knowing you can go anywhere. Wade depth is 600mm, but I for one am not a wader. There is a ton of grunt to get up steep slopes, even if it is uncooperative loose surfaces like rocky  dross.

Most SUV/LCVs make light work of sand, but mud and muck can bring the gormless badly unstuck. You can fit winches for emergencies should you need to haul ass out of a ditch. In fact, you could also haul someone else’s asses out of a ditch, and there is a tow hitch as well. It has the electric connections mounted high to avoid rock-bashing.

The Premcar alterations related to off-road only, but they’ve balanced that with on-road finesse which feels strangely enticing. You may feel like you can chuck it around like a rag doll, but the unladen weight of 2298kg, and GVM of 3250kg demands a little respect.

The payload of 961 includes stuff in the tray, and the bodies in the cabin, so don’t get too carried away. Operators have been known to load up like the Beverly Hillbillies, and that’s a no-go on public roads.

Suspension is double wishbone front and multi-link at the back, but the rear brakes are a drum affair from the 50’s.

On the highway, there is a raft of safety gear like blind spot and lane change intervention. It is far less intrusive than we’ve experienced on other brands. All that turns off when off-roading, especially the rear cross traffic alert, for obvious reasons.

It is surprisingly easy to use in traffic, and even tight parking spots are managed easily with the camera monitoring system.

After a week, something became very obvious; Navara Pro-4X Warrior is big, bold, and butch. It speaks to its roots, and the roots of the original Australian utes with its ability to drive across a field laden with stock feed, but take you into town on Friday night for dinner and a movie. When it comes to holiday season you can go anywhere you want whether there is a road or not.

We had the 7-speed automatic, but the 6-speed manual is available for those who like to shift-em-yourself. There is enough poke under the bonnet, and with a load on, loses none of its sparkle.

The last safety rating was 2015, lasting for 6 years.

Conclusion:

Premcar did a great job. Unlike other accessory companies, their Nissan partnership means whatever was added on by them can be warrantied at the Nissan dealer.

I’m not the off-road type. My idea of roughing it is 2 people using a single bathroom at a Westin, but Pro-4X Warrior has an indefinable something that makes it very capable, deeply sexy, and worth every centime.
