New Toyota and Lexus EVs at 2022 Electrify Expo in Long Beach

The Japanese car maker Toyota, and its luxury arm Lexus, featured their current and future electrified models at the biggest e-mobility show on the North American continent.

All electric models included the bZ4X (which is also the Subaru Solterra), which is the first of 7 vehicles with the bZ moniker. bZ refers to Beyond Zero and is a further step towards 70 electrified models by 2025.

The 2025 target will be a mix of pure EV Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Hydrogen electric vehicles like the 3rd generation Mirai, and an expansion of the hybrid and plug-in hybrid range.

Although Prius is no longer sold here, Prius Prime is a plug-in version of the best-known hybrid, along with 225kw RAV4 Prime, likewise a plug-in version of the hybrid system.

Also not for sale on Australian shores is the huge Tundra i-FORCE MAX which uses a twin turbo V6 hybrid drive.

Lexus brings its first all-electric electric vehicle, the all-new 2023 Lexus RZ 450e built on the BEV-specific platform (e-TNGA or electric- Toyota Next Generation Architecture). It joines the 2022 Lexus NX 450h+ which was the 1st dip into the world of plug-in hybrids with a 58km EV-only range.

There were a few things to take away from this. Toyota continues its successful partnership with Subaru that began with the BRZ/86 coupe, and continues with the Solterra/Bz4x SUV. It further transpires that as the global car-making family races towards the inevitability of electric mobility, the designs have become the norm.

Tesla may be the best-known EV, but it is fast losing ground as bigger, better-equipped manufacturers bring model after model to market.
