It is hard to be that the Original Mazda MX-5 arrived in  1989, and had no equals. Most small roadsters, like the Triumph TR7, Fiat Spider, Triumph Spitfire and MG B were all visible only in the rearview mirror, and Ford’s Capri convertible (made in Australia only) was a miserable excuse of a thing. It too was consigned to the automotive dustbin, where it belonged, yet many of those first MX-5s survive even today.

The 2024 MX-5 is about to get a huge bump in equipment and handling. The changes improve the little sports car without ruining it, a thing difficult to achieve. MX-5 is a car the LGBTI community have always been drawn to because it is different, thrifty, and compared to other convertibles, affordable.

Although few will ever need to take advantage of it, DSC-TRACK is Mazda’s new Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) mode designed for track days. There is also a new Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential (Asymmetric LSD), but both of these enhancements come only on the manual versions.

DSC-TRACK comes only on the range topping GT RS, and stops over-steering during a hazardous spin that the driver is unable to control. The DSC-TRACK follows Mazda’s ‘Jinba Ittai’ philosophy , meaning ‘horse and rider as one’. It assists the person behind the wheel, allowing them to  stay focused on driving

The Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential (Asymmetric LSD) stabilises vehicle turn-in behaviour by varying the limiting force of slip on the differential gear in response to vehicle acceleration and deceleration as the rear wheel vertical load changes. That’s handy whether on the track or in the mountain passes.

The accelerator pedal response feels more direct on manual models too. Electric steering has been tuned for a more natural and fluid feel.

The Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre engine has no turbo, but the perky 135kW/205Nm unit draws sound from its inner sanctum for what Mazda claims is a more stirring audible experience.

Inside, a new 8.8-inch centre display is the first in Mazda’s range with Connected Services that can connect to emergency services if needed. It also allows the driver to check on the status of the car from their pheon app.

Tan Nappa leather can be optioned on the RF GT.  The fine quality leather adorns the centre console as well as the seats.

Mazda MX-5 gets new 17-inch and 7 paint colours:

  • Snowflake White Pearl Mica
  • Zircon Sand Metallic
  • Deep Crystal Blue Mica
  • Soul Red Crystal Metallic
  • Machine Grey Metallic
  • Jet Black Mica
  • Aero Grey Metallic (new)

Summing up the comprehensive changes, Vinesh Bhindi, Managing Director for Mazda Australia, commented: “The Mazda MX-5 is an unmistakable icon. For more than 34 years, it’s been the go-to option for keen enthusiasts who want to delight in a thrilling drive no matter the destination, and these new updates further expand its already extensive repertoire to make it even more fun on track and more responsive on the road.

“It may be our most analogue-feeling car when it comes to dynamics, but the 2024 MX-5 also brings with it the latest connectivity and safety updates, ensuring the overall package is also at the cutting edge technologically.”

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 Roadster and RF will go on sale locally in Q1 2024. Mazda Connected Services will be available from H1 2024.
