2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance Review: A Thug in a Dinner Jacket
If you’ve been craving a frisky fusion of lusty performance and scalpel-sharp technology, the 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance will get your petrol-filled veins shooting floods of sparks instead. The monumental electric power continues to fan the flames moral superiority and smug satisfaction. Its cocktail of futuristic features, mind-bending acceleration, has a scintillating driving experience that leaves you panting.
Let’s delve deep inside Model 3’s inner sanctum, probing her privates in search the cornucopia of delicious treats that still sets Tesla apart.
Design and Interior: Futuristic Chic Meets Minimalist Zen
Despite the fact that most brands age out their models after at around 7 years, the 6-year-old Model 3 has had a going over. It retains a sleek, minimalist design that’s been given a tasteful nip and tuck which Tesla claims almost 50% new. Although all Tesla’s have the same look, Model 3 still manages that modern, almost sci-fi allure that is distinctive and instantly recognisable.
At launch, Model 3 more or less had the market to itself but it is now up against some delicious EV design opposition.

The familiar low, aerodynamic stance hints at its performance prowess, sharpened by slit-like headlights, a Hollywood nose job, and fabulous carbon fibre highlights. The freshened front end has gently nudged Model 3 into a new era, and if you’re the sort of boy who enjoys an instant facelift, 340kw is at the end of your fingertips.
The naff “Performance” badge is a stylised starfield as seen from Warp Drive. Naff, Naff, Naff. More naffness can be seen on the front seat headrests. In the bin with it!
Aside from tiny misdemeanours, Tesla’s cabin continues its minimalist theme with a large central touchscreen that controls almost everything. It’s a bit like living in the future—though it might take a moment to get used to not having physical buttons for every function. The heated/cooled seats are sporty yet properly comfortable, and are wrapped in high-quality, genuine-fake-simulated-leather that feels both premium and durable. No knackered bovines were bowled over in the making of this car.
Every surface has had the laying-on of hands, everything is new. Plus, the spaciousness of the cabin and boot means you can make the most of your water sports without having to say sorry. Everything is wipeable.
Steering column stalks have been banished to a subtle virtual slider on the righthand side of the screen for gears, and buttons on the steering wheel. The latter fenagles lights, camera access, wipers and indicators. If the screen has a hissy fit, either pressing the concealed letters in the overhead console, or by simultaneously caressing both steering wheel scrollers, emergency gear selectors magically appear beside the dome lights overhead.
With the screen blank you may not have a speedo but at least Model 3 Performance won’t leave you stranded like a shag on a rock.
The chic mood lighting can be set to any colour and will come on at dusk, but set to “always on”, lends a Star Trek experience to slipping out for a sliced loaf even at midday.
There is now a rear screen which I fancy will see little use. It would have been handier to have driver instruments or an HUD instead.
Performance: Hold Onto Your Hats (and Your Hair)
The real excitement happens under the bonnet—or, in this case, where the bonnet would be if this were a conventional car. The 2024 Model 3 Performance boasts a dual-motor all-wheel drive system that propels it from 0 to 100 km/h in an organ-rearranging 3.1 seconds. Yes, you read that right: 3.1 seconds. If you’re not already wetting your seat, you might want to don a Depends.
Although 40kw less than the US Model 3, the acceleration is Skud-like, and the immediate torque delivery ensures that you’re not just keeping up with traffic; you’re ahead of it. The handling is deliciously precise and as agile as a cat on carpet. Thanks to its low centre of gravity and adaptive suspension, the line is held with vice-like grip. Whether you’re carving through winding roads or zipping down the freeway, the Model 3 is incredibly sporty. Performance feels like an extension of your own will. It’s a driving experience that’s both exhilarating and incredibly refined.
Technology: Autopilot and Beyond
Tesla’s reputation for cutting-edge technology is well-deserved, and the Model 3 Performance is no exception. The Autopilot system continues to impress. Adaptive cruise comes on at the press of a scroll, with a second press bringing auto-steer online. There is no auto lane change so although the cruise stays on, auto-steer needs a prod after every lane change. The is so much bing-bonging going on that you feel like you’re an Avon convention on wheels.
Its ability to handle highway driving and parking manoeuvres has a level of finesse that makes you wonder if it’s been taking driving lessons from the future. Model 3 Performance travels mighty close to those very big trucks, and with a slightly nervous disposition I found myself tugging the wheel now and then to bring her into a more convivial space.
Over-the-air updates means your car is always learning and improving, which is a pretty cool feature if you ask me. It also allows the driver to use their phone as a key and to monitor and manipulate the Tesla from afar.
The touchscreen interface is where you’ll interact with most of the car’s functions, from climate control to media. It’s intuitive and responsive, though it does require a bit of a learning curve if you’re used to more traditional controls. The integration of Tesla’s navigation system with real-time traffic updates ensures that you’re never stuck in a jam without a workaround. It can see tail lights and traffic lights but is easily fooled in bright sunlight. It thinks the sun’s reflection is an internal light. We are still a very long way from driverless cars being trustworthy.
Range and Charging: Power Up and Go
One of the standout features of the Model 3 Performance is its impressive range. With an estimated range of over 480 km on a single charge (530km showing when I collected it), you can go about your day-to-day life without constantly eyeing the nearest charging station. And when it’s time to charge, Tesla’s Supercharger network makes it a breeze to top up quickly, so you’re back on the road in no time. All superchargers are not the same, and the 270kw 3rd gen units are few and far between. Most are still the old 120kw units. Model 3 Performance has an 80kwh battery and max 250kw charging. You can use the Ultra-Rapid Chargefox units at a pinch, but for some reason people seem to glare at you when you do.
Final Thoughts: A Leap Ahead in Electric Excellence
The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance isn’t just a car; it’s an experience. It combines blistering performance with futuristic technology and a sleek design, but it now has stiff competition in the electric vehicle market. Model 3 is a compelling choice but the erratic owner is putting off buyers.
There have been price reductions to tempt punters onto the website and into a test drive.
Enjoy.
