We like vans. We really do.
And if you’re still scoffing from the back seat of your lifted dual-cab ute, you’re missing the point—and the party. The 2025 Ford Transit Custom Sport LWB Dual Cab isn’t just a box on wheels. It’s a box with flair, grunt, and enough room to cart your entire life (and a few regrets) across the continent.
Urban Escape: From Snarls to Serenity
We loaded ours to the gunnels and pointed it southwest, through Sydney’s finest traffic purgatory and into the open arms of the Hume. The trip covered hideous city snarls, but as the countryside opened before us, the highway felt warm and welcoming. The roadtrip was on.
Ride quality? Firm when unladen, but once the rear’s brimming with bric-a-brac, it settles into something almost civilised. Independent rear suspension helps, though don’t expect Vulcan-level cornering. This is a van, not a spaceship. But on long stretches, it’s a joy—especially with the 8-speed auto and 125kW/390Nm diesel ticking along at 7.1L/100km.
The right-hand column-mounted gear shifter is easy to use and keeps the floor clear—ideal for sliding between seats. While plenty of cars now use stalks, it’s worth noting that other Transit variants still rely on a centre knob or traditional console-mounted lever. This one feels cleaner, more purposeful, and better suited to vanlife ergonomics.

The Final Stretch: Dirt, Dust, and Drama
The highway turnoff came all too soon. Country lanes followed—narrow, cracked, and increasingly chaotic. The bitumen gave way to pothole roulette, then to loose gravel, then to something that could generously be described as a goat track. The Transit danced along the dirt rather more daintily than expected, never once feeling out of its depth.
And just when we thought we’d arrived, the tiny house revealed itself—1.5km beyond the farm gate, tucked behind a stand of gums and a fence that had seen better decades. The final stretch was rutted, dusty, and oddly theatrical. The Transit took it all in stride, suspension still intact, cargo still secure, and passengers still vaguely amused.
Cabin and Tech: Workhorse with Wit
SYNC4 runs on a 13” touchscreen, and the infotainment system is refreshingly intuitive. CarPlay connects without drama, and the driver’s screen—described as 12 inches—is really a 7” display flanked by decorative icons. Voice control is hopeless, but climate controls are physical and permanent. Steering wheel buttons will feel familiar to Ford drivers, and the driving position takes a bit of fiddling to get right. Heated front seats and a windscreen laced with micro heating elements are a godsend in winter.
Safety and Driver Aids: Mostly Civilised
ANCAP Platinum safety means proper driver aids. Lane-keeping felt more whisper than nudge, but cruise control’s traffic jam function was a win. The flat floor and lack of front console make slipping into the back seats a doddle. Side doors open sliding-style, and the B-pillar handles are a godsend. There’s plenty of room front and back—stretch out, take a load off, nap under a blanky. These things also make brilliant campers.
Cargo and Access: Barn Doors Only
The barn doors open to 90 and 180 degrees, but side sliders only access the passenger section. Cargo stays rear-only, which is fine unless you’re trying to sneak in a mattress without waking the neighbours.
