What is the Audi A2 e-tron?
The A2 e-tron is Audi’s new entry-level electric model, designed to make premium electric mobility more accessible. It revives the A2 nameplate last seen 25 years ago, when the original aluminium-bodied A2 pioneered efficiency and urban mobility.
Audi has announced the A2 e-tron, a new all-electric entry-level model family that promises to open the gates to premium EV ownership for a younger, more price-conscious audience.
Revealed at Audi’s Annual Media Conference, the A2 e-tron will be built at the company’s home in Ingolstadt, Germany, with a world premiere scheduled for fall 2026. For now, all we have is a design sketch showing a compact, aerodynamic silhouette that hints at Audi’s direction for the segment.
“We’ve listened. Our customers want electric mobility that impresses in everyday life,” said Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. “The A2 e-tron is our promise to deliver exactly that: efficient, compact, and confident.”
When will the Audi A2 e-tron be available?
The A2 e-tron will have its world premiere in fall 2026. Australian availability and pricing have not yet been announced, but it will likely arrive in local showrooms in 2027 if Audi follows its typical global rollout pattern.
The name is a deliberate callback to the original Audi A2, a vehicle that was arguably ahead of its time. Launched in 1999, the A2 was built almost entirely from aluminium, weighed just over 1,000 kg, and achieved fuel economy figures that embarrassed larger, heavier cars. It was also polarising, looking like nothing else on the road, and sold in modest numbers before being discontinued in 2005.

The new A2 e-tron carries this spirit forward: a compact, city-focused vehicle designed for efficiency and everyday usability. Audi is clearly targeting the growing market of urban Europeans who want an electric car that can handle the daily commute without the price tag of an e-tron GT.
Why is the A2 e-tron significant for Audi?
The A2 e-tron is part of Audi’s broader push to offer electric vehicles across all segments. Combined with the full-size Q9 at the top of the range, it gives Audi an EV lineup spanning from entry-level compacts to large luxury SUVs.
This announcement is also about jobs and German manufacturing. Döllner made a point of emphasising that the A2 e-tron will be built in Ingolstadt, securing employment and demonstrating Audi’s commitment to domestic production.
“The A2 e-tron is crucial for our brand and also for our German home,” Döllner said. “With the production of an additional fully electric model family in Ingolstadt, we are securing jobs and delivering electric mobility ‘made in Germany.’”
For Australian buyers, pricing will be the key question. If Audi can position the A2 e-tron below the Q4 e-tron (currently starting around $75,000 driveaway), it could open the brand to buyers currently cross-shopping the Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal, or even the incoming Chinese compacts from brands like Zeekr.
More details will emerge as the fall premiere approaches. For now, Audi is keeping its cards close, but the revival of the A2 name suggests the company understands it needs to compete on price, not just prestige.
