2026 MG MGS6 EV Lands In Australia From $49,990 Driveaway

The 2026 MG MGS6 EV has arrived in Australia, and MG has decided subtlety can stay outside with the leaf blower.

MG launched the S6 EV in Australia, firing a shot over the bow of the cram-packed mid-sized electric SUV segment. It’s becoming an ode to the Spanish Armada as wave after wave of new models wash ashore. The new MG targets the dominant Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7 with an aggressive sub-$50,000 entry point, but I doubt the Tesla will be even slightly bothered.

The two-tier range starts with a single-motor Essence RWD at $49,990 driveaway, and is topped off by a dual-motor Essence AWD at $56,990 driveaway.

The Android Architecture Under the Bonnet

MG’s spiv department labels the infotainment OS as the proprietary iSMART, but a clever eye will notice the system is less bespoke and more bewildered, if the other brands based on AAOS are anything to go by. The 12.8-inch central display and 10.25-inch driver cluster run the thinnest corporate veil atop an Android Automotive OS framework.

This architectural shortcut gives us a familiar visage, but will no doubt inherit a permanent system translation penalty.

What we’ll be looking out for: sluggish boot-up sequences, sudden application failures, system hangs, black glass. This creates a lag when waiting for critical reversing camera feeds or climate controls to initialise. Furthermore, parent company SAIC will not be giving us the over-the-air updates it has rolled out in other markets, meaning owners must visit a dealership to patch any underlying software bugs. Given our concerns over the EVs OS, OTAs are essential.

For a hint at what to expect, see our story on the glorious but very wicked IM6 and its glitchy OS. It got even worse with updates.

Specifications and Powertrains

Both variants carry a 77kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese battery pack, a chassis with MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, and 20-inch alloy wheels with low-wind-resistance aerodynamic caps.

  • Essence RWD: 180kW/350Nm to the rear wheels, with a claimed 0–100km/h of 7.3 seconds and a 530km WLTP driving range. We will expect closer to 450-480kms based on past experience.
  • Essence AWD: 266kW/ 540Nm with dual-motor AWD, 5.1 seconds 0-100, and a clamed WLTP driving range to 485km.

DC fast-charging peaks at very modest 144kW on a fast charger of 150kW and over, so will get from 10 to 80% in a glacial 38 minutes. An efficiency-boosting cabin heat pump and a selectable single-pedal driving mode come standard for both, as does a towing capacity of 1500kg braked.

Measurements and Cabin Layout

The dimensions put the S6 EV squarely in the family sweet spot, at 4708mm long, 1912mm wide, and 1664mm tall.

Rear cargo capacity is 581 litres to under the parcel shelf, and 1690 litres with seats flat. The RWD version has an 86-litre frunk, shrinking to 67 litres in the dual-motor AWD for obvious reasons.

The cabin is promised to have premium materials, heated and ventilated vegan leather front seats with suede inserts, a heated steering wheel, and heated outboard rear seats. A few final touches include an 11-speaker premium audio system with subwoofer, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 50W wireless charging pad.

The MG Pilot bundles active cruise control, lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, and a 360-degree camera as a package. MG warranty starts at 7-year/unlimited-kilometre, and stretches to 10 years/ 250,000km if serviced with MG. There are several OEMs doing a similar thing so owners have to decide if risking a cheaper service elsewhere is worth it.

EVs have less to service, but there are mechanical parts and bodywork that may need looking at. So far, batteries, even old ones, have proved to be fairly reliable, and newer technology is looking even better.
