2026 MG4 EV Urban Price Confirmed: $31,990 Driveaway, Test Drives from 1 April

Remember when we told you the MG4 EV Urban was coming and that pricing would make you smile? We were not lying. MG has confirmed the numbers, and they are rather lovely: $31,990 driveaway for the 43kWh variant. That is an electric car, with a proper warranty, for less than a mid-spec Corolla.

I shall pause while that sinks in.

The larger 54kWh battery version comes in at $34,990 driveaway. Both prices include on-road costs, which means no nasty surprises at the dealer. Test drives begin nationwide from 1 April 2026.

The Price That Changes Everything

When we first covered the MG4 EV Urban, the company was still being coy about the final sticker. Well, the coyness is over. At $31,990 driveaway, MG has delivered on its promise of an electric vehicle that competes directly with petrol hatchbacks on price.

For context: a Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport Hybrid costs $32,470 before on-roads. A Mazda3 G20 Pure starts at $28,690 before on-roads. By the time you add registration, stamp duty, and dealer delivery, the MG4 EV Urban is either matching or undercutting the mainstream petrol competition.

And it does not burn petrol. At all. With 98 RON at $2.65 a litre and diesel cracking three dollars, that matters rather a lot.

What You Get for $31,990

The entry-level 43kWh variant delivers approximately 350 kilometres of range on the WLTP cycle. That is enough for a week of commuting without touching a charger. The 54kWh version stretches to around 450 kilometres.

Both variants feature:

  • 6-in-1 electric drive system with integrated motor, controller, and reduction gear
  • 150kW DC fast charging capability (10-80% in approximately 35 minutes)
  • 10.25-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 7-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Full suite of driver assistance systems targeting 5-star ANCAP
  • 10-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty when serviced through the MG dealer network

The front-wheel drive layout uses a torsion beam rear suspension rather than the multi-link setup found on higher-spec MG4 models. It is not a sports car. It is a sensible city runabout that happens to be electric.

Why This Matters

MG is not the first brand to offer a cheap EV, but they are the first to offer a cheap EV with a 10-year warranty, nationwide dealer support, and fast-charging capability that makes longer trips genuinely feasible.

The BYD Dolphin, which starts at $36,890 driveaway, suddenly looks rather expensive. The Nissan Leaf, which starts at $49,990 before on-roads and comes with Nissan’s current reputation for existential crisis, looks like a relic from another era.

At this price point, the only real question is whether you can live with MG’s interior quality and infotainment experience. The answer, for most people doing the school run and the weekly shop, will be yes.

Test Drives Start 1 April

MG has confirmed that customer test drives will be available across its Australian dealer network from 1 April 2026. First deliveries are expected shortly after.

If you have been waiting for an electric car that costs the same as a petrol one, the wait is over. The MG4 EV Urban is here, and it costs $31,990 driveaway.
