With not the smallest amount of irony, I say that, as petrol prices explode, MG has timed the slightly less volatile Australian launch of the MG4 EV Urban rather nicely. The new entry-level lekky runabout strips back the existing MG4 formula to deliver what the company calls “accessible EV ownership” at pricing comparable to petrol equivalents. That is PR speak for a “super cheap middle finger to oil companies”.
In fact it is rather cute
Two Battery Options
The MG4 EV Urban arrives with a choice of a tiny 43kWh or a less-tiny 54kWh battery pack. MG hasn’t confirmed exact pricing yet, but the messaging is clear: they’re aiming to undercut the current their very own MG4 range and compete directly with legacy branded fossil-powered boat anchors on sticker price.
Both variants are front-wheel drive with a torsion beam rear suspension setup. That’s a simpler, cheaper configuration than the multi-link rear found on higher-spec MG4 models, but it also frees up interior space. Expect the Urban to be a nervous Nelly in corners, and that it is not meant to be a sports car.
Bigger Inside Than You’d Think
MG’s spin doctor’s make a point of the Urban’s packaging efficiency. Despite a compact petite-ish 2750mm wheelbase, they claim a handsome 6’3″ hunk can sit alluringly in the rear with headroom and legroom to spare. It’s rather a moot point, isn’t it? The 382-litre boot is respectable for a car in this segment, enough for the weekly shop or a cheeky weekend away.
The front-wheel drive layout means no rear motor eating into boot space, and the cheap-and-cheerful rear suspension creates more room for passengers. It’s the classic engineering trade-off: (much) less capability, more practicality.

The Fuel Price Argument
MG’s pitch to punters is straightforward: the more explosive the Middle east, the more attractive an EV. Volatile fuel prices make EVs more attractive to budget-conscious buyers, and the MG4 EV Urban is designed to make the switch positively essential.
“With the wildly fluctuating fuel prices Australia is experiencing at the moment, MG is thrilled to be expanding our EV range with this latest addition,” said Dimitri Andreatidis, MG Motor Australia’s Marketing Director.
It’s a fair point. When fuel swings from $1.50 to $2.20 per litre within weeks, the predictability of home charging becomes genuinely appealing for anyone doing regular commuting. Charge your city car while you sleep. Let’s see a Nissan GT-R driver do that.
Design and Safety
Styling follows the MG4’s existing formula with 17-inch Starburst alloy wheels and a full-width rear LED light bar. The interior prioritises sensible usability over useless flash, which suits the Urban positioning.
MG is targeting a 5-star ANCAP safety rating with a full suite of driver assistance tech. All MG vehicles come with a 10-year warranty when serviced through the dealer network.
The Bottom Line
The MG4 EV Urban is designed for people who want to go electric without paying mortgaging their kidneys. No fancy rear motor, no multi-link suspension, just a sensible, cute-ish EV hatchback with enough range for daily duties and weekend escapes.
