I’ve been following the climate debate with interest.

Camps fall in to 2 categories: Those who trust science, and those who ignore science. There is a correlation between the two, which seems to follow along religious and voting habits. Go ahead, prove me wrong.

Other GayCarBoys EV Stories:

Recent COVID experiences seemed to take the same path. Conservatives appear to either follow one cult or other, and place the importance of money over science. Strangely, those whacky conspiracy theorists espouse similar thoughts. It also explains the failed COVID vax rollout, the failed NBN rollout, the failed climate policy, and other failed policies too numerous to name.

That’s more of an observation than anything else of course.

ABOVE: EV models

Regardless of rudderless government ideals, auto makers have been ahead of the curve. It may have been driven by European policy, but they are still ahead of the crowd. The last 2 years has been awash with new electric cars, and the announcements of many more to come. Fossil fuel interests have been shamelessly lobbying the Australian government to keep their stranded assets from falling off the financial cliff. Investors and backers are talking with their feet, so the fossil fuel end is nigh.

Big car companies are aiming for 100% electric in 10 years, after which ICE models that burn bits of old dinosaur will vanish, rather like those dinosaurs.

Then, the equally wacky nutters will say, “oh yes, but, the electric cars are powered by coal right. That’s bits of old dinosaur, so there.” That misses one point: the power grid can be energised by the sun, a gentle breeze, or waves at the beach. Despite the rabid gas lobby trying to bribe the Australian government to make gas part of the “covid recovery,” power producers are moving to massive solar arrays and wind farms. Why? The fuel is free. Solar power is now the cheapest power in history.

Home batteries are seen as part of the solution, with EV batteries being used as home batteries via bi-directional charging. The resistance of a part of the political landscape is gradually vanishing. “Let the market decide,” is their mantra, but I’m not sure they like what the market is deciding.

So, the next time a climate nutter claims that the CO2 emissions are simply shifted from one place to another, try this argument: You can power the grid from anything, and there are currently energy providers doing just that.
