When the short-sighted, dim-witted conservated Australian Government dared the auto makers to leave, they did. After seeking a tiny percentage of the support that mining and energy receives, the car makers of Australia, all 3 of them, were denied support. The industry collapsed and manufacturing deferred to foreign climes. The rich mine bosses are a protect species, something that continues to this day. The UK has befitted from support the Australian government labelled “a waste of public money,” chalking up over a million vehicles made throughout the United Kingdom. The figure of 905,117 cars and 120,357 commercial vehicles, made a significant contribution to Blighty’s coffers.

ABOVE: The British Motor Industry in pictures

In another snub to the renewable/EV-hating conservative government downunder, 346,451 units (38.2%, or 2/5th of the British production) were electric, Hybrid, or Plug-in Hybrid. Only 191,247 units were for the UK market, with the rest exported, mainly to Europe. Many other countries have cars and commercial vehicles made in the UK, including, somewhat ironically, Australia. Imagine if that story had been reversed.

The British story wasn’t without bumps in the road. Covid and logistics scarred the industry for several years, but the industry is up, way up. Luxury and specialist care makers accounted for  34,613 units, worth an estimated £7.1 billion.

Meanwhile, Australia now imports all vehicles sold here, with few exceptions. While small-scale custom and heavy-duty manufacturing continues, Australia could learn a lesson. While some of the sites have been demolished, private and public investment could still reopen manufacturing plants here as it did in the UK.

Eight all-new cutting-edge models entered British production in 2023, including at the newly reopened Ellesmere Port EV-only plant, while some £23.7 billion of private and public investment commitments were made – more than in the previous seven years combined – from Cowley to Sunderland; gigafactories to R&D facilities.3
