BMW X5 M and X6 M Competition revisions include drive system upgrades and electrification that result in even more responsive power delivery. BMW M accounts for around one in five models sold in Australia.
BMW X5 M and X6 M Competition upgrades also include 48-volt technology for the first time. An electric motor is part of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. It can add 9kW/200Nm to the drive system, as well as functioning as a crankshaft-mounted starter generator. Its 48-volt battery sits in the engine bay and is charged by energy recuperation via the generator.
The new 4.4‑litre M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine has a cross-bank exhaust manifold, reinforced crankshaft drive, changes to turbocharging, a new air intake duct and an optimised oil supply system. Power figures are an impressive 460kW/750Nm, which BMW claims to deliver a sharper response. It is helped with the boost provided by the electric motor, for a 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

What’s new in the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission
The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic is new. It has three shift settings in both automated and manual mode. It put the power down through a revised M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and Active M Differential at the rear axle.
The M menu allows the driver switch from the default 4WD setting to 4WD Sport mode, resulting in a rear-wheel bias.
The chassis
The body structure results from “stiff” design for which M handling is well-known. There is standard adaptive M suspension Professional with reworked electronically controlled dampers and active roll stabilisation. Modified M Servotronic steering ratios provide a more satisfying experience, so BMW claims.
No M car is complete without M Compound brakes. BMW X5 M and X6 M Competition now applies the latest-generation of its integrated braking system in an M-specific configuration with two pedal feel settings.
Instead of just being interconnected with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) as before, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential also work in unison with near-actuator wheel slip limitation for the first time in the new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition.
Standard equipment extends to 21-inch M light-alloys at the front, and 22-inch M light-alloys at the rear. Optional forged M light-alloy wheels are available to customers as a no cost option.
