BMW will launch the X1 sDrive18i and xDrive20i petrol  in November, with the fully electric iX1 to follow in the early months of 2023.

It will look like the other X1’s in the line-up but runs purely on electric power. BMW promises a 440km range, and 22AC charging, and 130kw high speed DC charging, the fastest the 65kwh battery can charge. The iX1 will go from 10% to 80% in around 29 minutes.

There is a decent range of standard gear, as indeed there should be for premium electric car. Gay readers have told us they also expect value for money, but don’t want to pay over the odds.

Matrix LED headlights and indicators that pulse, are matched by flared wheel arches and huge LED tail lights, to make iX1 look modern without being weird. As more brands release electric versions of their petrol cars, electrification moves further from the theoretical to the commonplace.
