ABOVE: ANCAP crash-test – BYD SEAL 6, MG4 EV Urban and Tesla Model Y L.
Available as a sedan and wagon, the BYD was rated strongly across the four criteria. ANCAP said crash-test protection was good across nearly all critical body regions for the driver and passengers.
The MG4 EV Urban also scored five stars. The battery electric small car went on sale in March 2026 and got 87% for Adult Occupant Protection, 86% for Child Occupant Protection, 85% for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 82% for Safety Assist.
ANCAP noted good protection across key body regions in frontal and side-impact tests for the MG, while autonomous emergency braking performed well in forward pedestrian and cyclist tests. The rating applies to all MG4 EV Urban variants.
The six-seat Tesla Model Y L also received five stars, with 91% for Adult Occupant Protection and the strongest Safety Assist result in this group at 92%. The longer-wheelbase model was assessed using testing from the related five-seat Model Y, with extra checks to confirm the result could be applied to the three-row version.
The Tesla result does carry a buyer warning. ANCAP identified difficulties with child restraint installation in the second row, where many restraints could not be correctly fitted because of top tether routing limitations. In the third row, rearward-facing and forward-facing convertible child restraints could not be easily installed using the ISOFix anchorages.
That does not affect the five-star result, but families may be interested if they’re shopping the six-seat layout. ANCAP says buyers should take care when choosing and fitting child restraints in those positions.
The Skoda Octavia keeps a five-star rating after reassessment of cars built from July 2025. Its updated result sits at 85% for Adult Occupant Protection, 81% for Child Occupant Protection, 81% for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 82% for Safety Assist.
Carla Hoorweg, Chief Executive Officer of ANCAP Safety, said the results showed different strengths across the models in her characteristically diplomatic way. The BYD leads on Adult Occupant Protection, the Tesla tops Safety Assist, and the MG holds its place as a small electric car against larger and more expensive competition.
The key scores are below.
