The big Audi Convertible is luxurious, electric, and autonomous. Audi claims to redefine the motoring future by making each drive, a” world class experience.”
Audi Skysphere was revealed recently and will make a public debut at Monterey Car Week, on the fairways of the Pebble Beach Golf Course.
The 465kw electric convertible, driven by the driver in sport mode, has a length of 9.94m, but at the touch of a button, Audi Skysphere enters Autonomous mode, and extends itself by 250mm to 5.19m. The driver is then able to enjoy a true GT experience with capacious legroom. Steering wheel and peddles fold away like something on a Thunderbirds set.

Audi Skysphere is fully connected to Audi’s intelligent ecosystem, using onboard sensors to monitoring surroundings for the drive, and will collect passengers, and handle charging with needing a driver to give it big hugs.
If it looks like something Malibu Barbie might be seen in, that’s no surprise. Audi Skysphere was conceived in the Audi studio in that iconic Californian beach-side town.
“New technologies like electrification, digitalization, and autonomous driving gave us the opportunity to create an experience that goes way beyond the one that typical roadsters offer today,” said design project manager Gael Buzyn.
For such a large car, Audi Skysphere weighs only 1800kg, but the 465kw/700Nm electric motors is good for a 4 second 0-100 sprint.
Drivers have 4 steering options with different ratios depending on application. The 4-wheel steering system transforms from comfortable highway mode, to short wheelbase parking mode, using innovative technology. Will it catch on? Like most concept cars, it is merely a showcase of what can be done, not what will be done.
Further comfort comes form advanced air suspension.
The long, leggy, sexy design harkens back to the mysterious Horch 853 Voll & Ruhrbeck Sport Cabriolet. We’ve come far though, with the Horch 853’s straight-8 managing a mere 89kw.
Audi skysphere, Audi grandsphere, and, coming in 2022, Audi urbansphere, show us where Audi is headed.
