We all have one, or indeed several, in the family. I was at a family do on the weekend and an elderly man told me of EVs, “We are not there yet”. Yes ladies and gents, we had a live one on the line.
There is little wonder that we are in such a dither about electrification when experts such as he, are offering opinions based on, well what are they based on?
I asked why he thought that and his reply was something that should be framed. “EVs are unreliable and break down all the time,” then went on to tell me that country charging was available and that electric cars were expensive.
I could not let that absolute bollocks pass unchallenged.

I asked him if he had driven an EV. He hadn’t. I asked him if he had charged an EV or had been in one while it was charging, and of course the answer was no. Like all his ilk, he gets his news from Murdoch hacks.
I told him that I have driven hundreds, if not thousands, of cars, SUVs, trucks, utes, bikes, e-bikes, scooters and other forms of personal transport devices, and the only ones ever to have let me down were internal combustion engine vehicles. His claim that people line up to charge was made as if it was ubiquitous, it is not. The claim was made based on a conservative news report that on a holiday weekend had people lining up for hours. This was probably true, however there were other chargers available to those people, they just weren’t using them because it meant a short drive.
I told him that Electric cars have two moving parts in their driveline as opposed to many hundreds in the engine and transmissions of ICE vehicles.
I then went on to explain that servicing oily bits cost money, big money, and lots of time. EVs have nothing to service. Tyres may need rotation and air filters for cabin climate control, but seals, gaskets, spark plugs, cylinders, bearings, and the other ICE ephemera simply don’t exist.
He was not deterred. “I’m not convinced.” I replied, “no, you refuse to listen and that is quite a different matter. You’re entitled to your own opinions, of course you are. You’re not entitled to your own facts.” This only seemed to infuriate him and he shifted ground.
Well, EVs are expensive, and everyone else pays to support them.
Not to be deterred, i told him that I had arrived in a Leapmotor B10 that costs a smidge under $42,000 drive away. I pointed out that my range of 530km was plenty, I could charge while I slept, charging was becoming more ubiquitous, and that if it was because of government subsidy, it was as nought when set against the many tens of billions a year the fossil fuel industry receives.
I excused myself and moved on after saying, “if you don’t understand already, I can’t explain it to you”.
Stupidity is one thing, that is something a stupid person can’t change. Ignorance, wilful or otherwise, is unforgivable, inexcusable and undeniably detestable.
