The Ferrari Dino 246 GT Coupe

A transverse, mid-engined V6 246 GT Coupe,  was named as a tribute to Enzo Ferrari’s late son. It is expected to fetch around 600,000 – $650,000. It has been said that this Dino was one of Pininfarina’s most beautiful designs, and became a production reality in 1969 with 150 two-litre 206 GT versions built. They were followed by 2,487 2.4 litre 246s Berlinetta, and 1,274 Targa-topped GTS models in 1974.

The much-maligned 246 GT Dino is now recognised as a proper classic Ferrari with prices climbing steadily as collectors rediscovered the Dino’s greatness.

This Australian-delivered 246 GT Dino Coupe is an early Australian delivery has been lovingly restored and well maintained. It was  delivered in January, 1971 in a rather unusual colour combo of Pino Verde paint and contrasting red leather upholstery.

The chassis number 01390 is an early M-series Dino, repainted in Ferrari red with light tan interior. This trim was done during a full body and mechanical restoration done under previous ownership.

It lived in Queensland with Ferrari Register members for most of that time, then was sold to the Sydney owner 14 years ago. The Dino is in excellent condition and would be a highlight of any Ferrari collection.

Ferrari 250 LM replica

Five lots before the Dino is a period-built Ferrari 250 LM replica that looks like a real race-worn Ferrari. It has ‘no reserve’ but should sell for $60,000-$100,000.

A 250 LM driven by Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory won the 1965 Le Mans 24-Hours, while in Australia journalist David McKay and Spencer Martin famously raced another of the 32 cars built. Among Ferrari lovers, the mid-engined 250 LM comes and honourable second only to its laudible predecessor, the front-engined 250 GTO.

To celebrate this fabulous Ferrari 250 LM, the replica being auctioned was at Peter Briggs’ York Motor Museum in West Australia before becoming part of collection of the current Sydney owner. A no expense spared mechanical overhaul brought it back to good condition.

It has a German-built Cologne 2-litre Ford V6 engine with a Lancia transaxle. Though not a real Ferrari, this 250 LM tribute sounds brilliant.

It is the closest most of us will come to owning an original multi-million dollar 250 LM, it has everything the real one does, and a fraction of the cost.
