The Ford Performance Mustang Supercar has claimed outright round victory and the first three places at the Repco SuperSprint, The Bend, South Australia. The eighth round of the 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, the event hosted Races 25, 26 and 27 of the season, with Ford Mustang winning Races 25 and 27 with two one-two finishes and two pole positions.
Shell V-Power Racing’s Fabian Coulthard, in his 200th round start, won the weekend in his No12 Mustang, helping Shell V-Power Racing take the lead in the Team’s Championship, with his team-mate Scott McLaughlin extending his advantage in the driver’s series. McLaughlin finished the weekend third on points, with Kelly Racing’s André Heimgartner posting his best weekend of the season to finish second on points, giving Mustangs the top three positions overall for the event.

“Another great weekend of Supercars racing,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand. “Shell V-Power Racing were truly impressive, so congratulations to Fabian on the win at his 200th round. Tickford were fast, too, with Jack’s Saturday podium, but the move of the weekend by André and the speed Rick showed in the Kelly Racing Mustangs was icing on the cake. The teams have been working extremely hard, and it’s great to see it come together after some difficult weekends.”

Over the course of the 2020 Repco SuperSprint, Mustang drivers took six of the nine podium spots available, with Coulthard winning Saturday’s opening Race 25 ahead of Tickford Racing’s Jack LeBrocq in the No. 55 Supercheap Racing Ford for a Mustang one-two finish. After starting 10th on the grid, Kelly Racing’s Heimgartner came home an impressive fourth, ahead of Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters and Kelly Racing team-mate Rick Kelly in sixth.
Sunday’s action saw McLaughlin record two Armor All Pole Positions in back-to-back sessions, with the Championship leader coming home third ahead of his team-mate in Race 26, with a mature drive to yield championship points. Heimgartner was again impressive, making a move on McLaughlin to match his season-best result of second place, and again, Kelly Racing team-mate Rick Kelly not far behind in sixth.
The final race of the weekend saw a Shell V-Power Racing Team one-two finish, with the Mustangs of McLaughlin and Coulthard – who made an impressive start off the line – driving to a commanding victory. Tickford Racing’s Waters was the next-best Mustang in fifth, but again Heimgartner impressed, recovering from an opening-lap incident to climb back to seventh, with Kelly in eighth place.

“A stunning weekend for the Shell V-Power Racing Team, with both cars converting the hard work and effort that’s been put into them to fantastic results. For both cars to take a win and finish the weekend with a one-two is just rewards, and without some of the bad luck on Saturday, it might’ve been even better. Fitting for Fabian to win at his 200th round start, with both he and Scott showing they’re both strong team players, with Shell V-Power Racing Team now on top of the points, too.” – Dr Ryan Story, Team Principal and co-owner, Shell V-Power Racing Team.

“It was a weekend of highs and lows. Saturday was a really strong result for the team, particularly Jack [LeBrocq] – he was outstanding, with good strategy, and he managed his tyres extremely well. It was probably the win that got away, but he came away with his head held high with a strong drive from him.
“Today, we saw okay results for Cam [Waters], with him finishing in the Top Ten for both races, but he battled with tyres life in the first race. We rectified it for the second and there were some good learnings there. Poor old James [Courtney]; a mistake in qualifying saw him start last in the today’s first trace, but he still made up 10 spots with a strong drive, and Lee [Holdsworth] had shocking tyre life and a tyre fail in the first race. He soldiered on to record a finish and had a much stronger second race today.
“It’s a real challenge, as you’re not sure how to go in driving style and how conservative in the set-up of the car; we potentially over-reacted after the race this morning [for the second], but we finished with no tyre issues, so we learnt from that. Highs and lows – but outstanding drive from Jack on Saturday.” – Tim Edwards, Team Principal, Tickford Racing

“This weekend has been extremely positive for the entire team and a great reward for all the guys. After a challenging few rounds and being away from families it can be quite difficult, but we managed to turn it around and have a really incredible weekend with some fantastic results and great teamwork on both cars.
“André’s podium was awesome to see and a real team effort. The guys nailed the pit stops, the engineering crew struck a setup balance that was quick but didn’t blister the tyres too badly, and André drove really well, so it all came together nicely. There was definitely a little frustration that we didn’t have the opportunity to show what we could do again in the final race when André was spun by Shane [Van Gisbergen], because I think we could have got a second podium for the weekend, which would have been amazing.
“The Bend is definitely a track that suits us well. I think either car could have been on the podium in any of the weekend’s races. We were fast here at the pre-season test day when we tested the Mustangs for the first time, and every race this weekend we were comfortably inside the Top Ten. It gives us a lot of confidence heading into next weekend when we have another crack here, although with a different layout, [but] the setup strategy won’t be too different.” – Todd Kelly, Team Principal, Kelly Racing
