Geely EX2 Melbourne Show Deal Extended

Geely has returned with another little jab at legacy brands, and this one comes wrapped in charger cables and shiny paint.

The Geely EX2 will make its public debut at the Melbourne Motor Show, but the bigger story is not the turntable glamour. It is the updated pre-order offer. Buyers who order an EX2 online through the Geely Auto Australia website or through dealerships from 10 April to 30 April, then take delivery before 30 September, will get a complimentary EV home charger and free premium paint. The charger alone is with it’s weight smug, especially when your friends are lined up at petrol stations at $3.50L.

That offer was due to finish earlier, but Geely has now extended it to 30 April. Quite right too. If you are going to tempt Australians into a frisky little electric hatchback from a still-fresh brand, you may as well do it with something more useful than a branded tote bag and a tepid handshake.

This is not a deposit-heavy, fingers-crossed kind of arrangement either. Geely says the EX2 show offer is a no-deposit pre-order. In a market where some brands still behave as though buyers are an inconvenience to be fleeced mercilessly, Geely is dangling a rather more seductive proposition. Come and have a look, reserve the car, keep your deposit in your own pocket, and pick up a charger and premium paint while you are at it.

That is the sort of retail theatre buyers understand instantly, even if they think it is too good to be true. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

The EX2 joins the Geely EX5 EV and Starray EM-i PHEV in the local line-up, and the brand is using the Melbourne Motor Show to keep the pressure on. The little hatch is due in dealerships in Q3 2026, which means Geely is building interest now while keeping a few key numbers under wraps until closer to launch.

So what do we know?

Quite a bit, even if power, torque, battery size, and final pricing are all still being withheld for later. If you’re really curious, google UK reviews. The EX2 measures 4135mm long, 1805mm wide, and 1570mm tall, with a 2650mm wheelbase. That puts it squarely in the compact electric hatch conversation, which is precisely where buyers are starting to look if they want an EV that feels city-sized without being punishment-sized and is the right price.

Geely says the EX2 was the number one best-selling car in China last year. That is not a tiny claim. It also helps explain why the company sounds so relaxed about the local roll-out. She is not arriving as an oddball science project. She is arriving with proper sales swagger behind her.

The EX2 uses the same GEA platform as the EX5 and Starray EM-i, which Geely says allows smarter use of cabin space. It is odd for a platform that shares ICE roots feels more EV. The company claims no fewer than 30 storage compartments scattered through the interior. That sounds over baked until you remember how much modern life involves cables, bottles, handbags, shopping bags, sunglasses, rogue lip balm, and other human life detritus.

If Geely has made a small hatch with enough cubbies to stop daily life sloshing around the cabin like loose crockery in a caravan, that is not trivial. That is good design.

The drivetrain is simple on paper. A single electric motor is mounted at the rear, driving the rear wheels. That gives the EX2 a slightly more interesting shape to its story than the usual cheap EV formula. Rear-wheel drive in a compact electric hatch is ta more joyful experience, and multi-link independent rear suspension gives Geely another small but worthwhile bragging right. The alternative twist beam never does quite the same job.

Standard equipment also includes a liquid-cooled battery pack, plus additional storage in the frunk.

Geely is not pitching the EX2 as a bare-bones sin bin with a plug. It is trying to make the package sound thoughtful. Clever design, rear-wheel drive, independent rear suspension, useful storage, and a charger thrown in for good measure. Someone in the product planning team has looked at buyer grumbles and decided not to be chintzy and cheap about it.

Colour choices have now been confirmed too. Moon White is the standard finish, while premium paint choices are Aurora Green, Comet Grey, Nebula Beige, Jupiter Pink, and Star Silver. That is a decent spread, and Jupiter Pink alone suggests Geely is not afraid of a buyer with more front than Myer.

The free premium paint matters more to some buyers. They are sparkle but asking them to pay extra for the colour they truly want is one of the more annoying little habits of the modern car business. Waiving that cost, while also chucking in a home charger, makes the EX2 show offer feel like proper value.

Of course, Geely still has to reveal the numbers that matter most. We do not yet know battery size, power, torque, or the final Australian price. Those details will arrive closer to launch later this year, and they will determine whether the EX2 is merely well-timed or genuinely disruptive.

But as a piece of pre-launch mischief, this is well judged. The brand has given showgoers a reason to consider before the car gets near dealerships.

Geely has not finished the EX2 argument yet. Pricing, range, and power will matter. But for now, the brand has done enough to make Melbourne worth a look, and enough to make rival small EV players glance nervously at the freebies table.
