Geely EX5 scores wireless Android Auto and sanity saving presets

Geely is beaming a fresh batch of digital competence to the EX5 SUV this week. This OTA update is rolling out between February 4 and 9, aimed at making the car slightly less of a nagging nanny and more of a co-pilot. The headline act is the arrival of Android Auto. Whether you prefer a tidy wireless connection or you are still clinging to your cables, the system now plays nice with your phone. It is a welcome relief for anyone who finds factory navigation systems about as intuitive as a tax return.

The real hero of this update is the Drive Setup one touch activation. Modern EVs love to reset your preferences every time you turn them off, forcing a tedious ritual of menu diving. Geely has finally relented. You can now bundle your favourite settings into a single profile and trigger it via a steering wheel shortcut or a quick swipe on the screen. This covers everything from your preferred energy regeneration level to the drive mode. More importantly, it allows you to silence the speed limit alerts and lane keeping assistance without losing your mind. One tap and the car stops lecturing you about your life choices.

For those who enjoy a bit of theatre, the update includes customisable AVAS low speed alert sounds. You can now warn pedestrians of your arrival using audio profiles named Classic, Galactic, or Constellation. It is a bit of cosmic flair for a car that usually operates in silence. They have also tucked a tailgate control button into the swipe down menu, because fumbling for a physical button is apparently very 2024. A new notification sound will also chirp to let you know you have successfully switched drive modes, just in case the change in throttle response was too subtle for you.

You can handle the entire installation in your driveway. There is no reason to visit a service centre and drink their questionable coffee while a technician plugs in a laptop. Geely recommends tethering the car to your home Wi-Fi or a solid smartphone hotspot to ensure the download does not give up halfway through. It is a painless DIY job that actually adds value to the driveway experience.

According to Geely, these tweaks are the result of listening to actual owners rather than just engineers in a basement. It is a refreshing change of pace. If you are sitting in a Starray EM-i feeling left out, hang tight. Your first major update is scheduled to drop in the latter half of Q1. For now, EX5 owners get to enjoy the perk of being the favourite child.
