Hyundai INSTER: The Compact EV Champion Redefining City Mobility
Hyundai has unveiled the INSTER, its newest all-electric A-segment sub-compact, setting a new what the company claims is a benchmark in urban electric mobility, but all new launch models claim the same.
As EVs become more mainstream, there’s a growing demand for affordable, flexible models that offer quality and innovation. Cheaper batteries are only part of the solution, the design has to deliver. The INSTER mixes Hyundai’s practicality, efficiency, and cutting-edge design to create uniquely styled city EV that promises much, and will hopefully deliver.
A Range That’s Ready for Real Life
The Hyundai INSTER comes in two battery sizes, standard 42 kWh battery with a range of up to 327 km (WLTP) on 15-inch wheels, or a 49 kWh long-range version with 370 km on a single charge. The range is decent especially when measured against the Fiat 500e and Mini, both of which are more expensive with much less range.
*All range claims should be taken with as indicative only – real life driving rarely delivers the promised numbers.
The INSTER supports DC high-power 120 kW station charging, allowing it to go from 10 to 80% charge in around 30 minutes.
Powerful and Refined Performance
Hyundai’s INSTER makes the most of its compact size without skimping on performance. The base motor delivers 71.1 kW (97 PS), while the long-range model steps it up to 84.5 kW (115 PS. With 147 Nm of torque, the INSTER delivers smooth EV acceleration, something buyers seem to like.
The INSTER also debuts Hyundai’s innovative hydro bushing technology, a feature usually reserved for high-end models. By enhancing the electric motor mount with hydro bushings, Hyundai has optimised INSTER’s ride quality, minimising vibration and enhancing comfort. Suspension uses high-performance shock absorbers to deliver a more composed ride, even when city roads get rough. Compared to its petrol-powered cousin, the CASPER, Hyundai has significantly refined the INSTER’s ride and handling.

Quiet, Comfortable, and Versatile
Hyundai has taken special care to make the INSTER a sanctuary from city noise. Through advanced NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) technologies, the INSTER is designed to keep road noise and vibrations away. From thicker glass in the front doors to dual-sealing on both the front and rear doors, Hyundai has created an impressively quiet cabin experience. The front underbody cover reduces drag while further minimising road noise, making high-speed driving remarkably smooth. In addition, Hyundai’s use of a motor sound absorption package and carefully tuned noise inflow routes gives occupants a quieter experience, even at speed.
The INSTER is packed nifty touches such as the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and matching infotainment screen. Wireless charging and pixel-themed graphics on the steering wheel boss give the cabin bit of polish. INSTER’s front-row seats offer walk-through access, while both front and rear seats fold flat, opening up a range of storage configurations.
INSTER’s customisable trim options have accents in colours like Newtro Beige and Khaki Brown. Its versatile cabin, combined with clever storage solutions and up to 351 litres of cargo space, means the INSTER city car has enough space for daily duty. While not class leading
Distinctive Design and Eco-Friendly Construction
The INSTER’s design is bold, blending SUV-inspired styling with a compact footprint that’s ideal for urban driving. It’s larger and longer than Hyundai’s CASPER ICE, with a 180 mm increase in wheelbase that enhances both stability and interior space. Strong fender lines, a high-tech circuit board-style bumper, and robust skid plates give it a rugged look, while signature LED daytime running lights and pixel graphic accents give INSTER the family look identifying it as a Hyundai.
Hyundai has also committed to eco-friendly materials in the INSTER’s construction. The black high-gloss exterior paint is derived from recycled tyres, while the interior materials incorporate recycled PET from plastic bottles and bio-polypropylene from sugarcane. This sustainable approach highlights Hyundai’s commitment to reducing environmental impact, making the INSTER not only stylish and practical but also conscientious.
Drivers can choose from Sienna Orange Metallic and Buttercream Yellow Pearl, with two-tone options for added flair.
Packed with Advanced Safety and Technology
Hyundai INSTER has an array of driver assistance features including Hyundai’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, that include Lane Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Highway Driving Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance. There is also Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist Rear and a Surround View Monitor to make popping to the shops a bit less stressful. Hyundai’s Digital Key 2 Touch provides a seamless way for drivers to access their vehicle, while 64-colour ambient lighting gives the cabin a great night feel.
The INSTER also boasts Hyundai’s V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) technology, which allows drivers to charge devices directly from the vehicle’s battery. Whether it’s an electric bike, a camping light, or a laptop, the V2L feature makes INSTER a mobile power hub.
Coming Soon to Australia and Beyond
After its initial release in Korea, the Hyundai INSTER is set to launch in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific regions. With production at Gwangju Global Motors (GGM) in Korea, Hyundai’s newest EV will offer a real challenge to Chinese models, something that should be welcome by buyers.
