Hyundai updates Tuscon SUV for 2010

The refreshed 2020 Hyundai Tucson opens with an enticing new Active variant as part of a streamlined four-trim grade range.

2020 Tucson introduces additional standard safety, comfort and style enhancements for the new entry level Active (replacing the Go entry variant) and Active X models.

  • Introducing 2020 Tucson Active, the attractively-priced opener for refreshed range
  • Extra equipment and standard safety upgrade for new Tucson Active and Tucson Active X models in four-grade line-up
  • Enhanced visual appeal with alloys wheels standard across the range

In a key safety upgrade, 2020 Tucson features as standard a camera-based Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) City/Urban system with Forward Collision Warning (FCW) for automatic versions of the range-opening Active variant, and for Tucson Active X variants, as part of the Hyundai SmartSense™ advanced safety suite.

2020 Tucson Elite and Highlander models feature a camera and radar-based City/Urban/ Interurban FCA system with Pedestrian Detection function.

2020 Tucson Range

As part of its equipment upgrade the entry level 2020 Tucson Active now features a rear park-assist system, 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather-appointed steering wheel and gear knob, and a one-touch auto up/down function for the driver’s window – all additional features compared with the superseded 2019 Tucson Go models.

“The 2020 Tucson line-up builds strongly on our best-selling SUV’s appeal, starting with the new entry-level Active models, offering generous comfort, convenience and safety features as standard,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia CEO, Mr JW Lee.

SAFETY

As part of the standard safety upgrade for the 2020 Tucson range, Active and Active X models (automatic variants) receive a boost in safety through the standard fitment of SmartSense™ advanced safety technologies.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – City/Urban

Active and Active X (automatic variants only) feature the City/Urban version of the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system, which utilises a windshield-mounted camera to detect other vehicles in front of the Tucson.

If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound an audible warning chime and display a visual warning in the Supervision cluster. FCW is active above speeds of 8km/h, up to speeds of 180 km/h.

Additionally, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – City/Urban works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCW system warning). FCA – City/Urban is active above speeds of approximately 8 km/h, and will attempt to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 65 km/h.

The FCA City/Urban/Interurban/Pedestrian system featured in 2020 Tucson Elite and Highlander variants incorporates radar sensors in addition to the windscreen-mounted camera, and additional functionality, which is summarised in the table below.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System consists of two modes – Lane Departure Warning (LDW) mode, and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) mode.

At speeds of 60 km/h or above, LDW uses the windshield mounted camera to detect lane markings and monitor the vehicle’s position in the lane. Should the vehicle stray from the intended lane without indicators being activated, an audible and visual warning will be sounded.

LKA can be activated at speeds of 60km/h or above where lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are detected. LKA helps prevent the vehicle from straying from the lane by providing steering intervention should the driver not react to warnings from the LDW system.

Both LKA & LDW are momentarily deactivated whenever turn signals are active. Additionally, the driver must maintain control of the vehicle by holding the steering wheel.

Driver Attention Warning (DAW)

At speeds above 60km/h and below 180km/h, Driver Attention Warning (DAW) uses the windshield-mounted camera to continually monitor the vehicle’s position within the lane, whilst also tracking steering inputs, brake pedal inputs, as well as time since last break. Should the system detect careless driving (such as sudden steering/braking inputs and/or inability to keep within lane), the ‘Attention Level’ display on the cluster will continually decrease. Should the level decrease to a certain threshold, the DAW system will recommend that the driver take a break.
