The new electric Jeep Avenger is cute as all-get-out – a peach of a thing well worth a look.

It’s cute little face, pert rump, and high-set design make Avenger one of the nicest looks in the segment.

115kw/260Nm is enough for city duty from the front wheel drive EV.

200mm ground clearance allows the little jeep to tackle a little light track work, but it really isn’t designed to be a tough, all-terrain monster. For the time being, that mantle remains the territory of the full 4X4 petrol or diesel models. Even Tesla’s massive Cybertruck is more of an industry joke than serious explorer.

Although the cabin is pure Jeep, the radio and climate controls have a whiff of Peugeot about them.

Jeep continues the tradition of having topographic representations of terrain in and about the instruments, displays, and cabin fittings such as mats and plastic surfaces. In the past, the Rubicon Trail has been the go-to, but without being told, the average punter will just think it looks pretty.

The sound system in Jeep Avenger Summit is utterly scrumptious – rich, deep, and classy. “Favourites” are tricky to manipulate with the operator seemingly unable to delete en masse. If you want to get ride of 20 bogus saved stations, here’s a suggestion.

How to delete all U Connect Favourites.

Deleting/saving favourites is done by pressing the heart symbol on the right-hand side of the channels list. You can save a channel directly into the favourites menu by holding the desired button, but you’re not able to delete from that menu.

Since using the channel list is the only way to delete favourites, it is possible for a station to be in the favourites list but not in the channel list. Our car had moved states and still had many AM and FM stations from Victoria, and we were unable to delete since they no longer showed in the channel list.

Searching the user guide yielded no assistance – here’s the work-around:

  • Select a station that works
  • Go to the favourites list
  • Save the working station to all “favourites” you wish to delete by a press/hold of the favourite button.
  • Go to the station list and find the station you saved.
  • Keep pressing the HEART button until it is no longer high lighted in red.

You can now save favourites direct from the station list by selecting the heart, or by going to the favourites menu to press/hold the desired favourites button position.

Driving

The 54kwh battery is about average, and the 396km range is likewise. It is insufficient for road trips with fast charging a rare sight. This is rapidly changing, but there is no central app so drivers have to trawl several different apps, or take a chance that there is one where you’re going. Although some apps show a charger in use, they can’t show how many are waiting in a queue.

Ride is smooth and extremely quiet, and if you want a little more pep, select SPORT. It won’t make much difference but will make you feel great.

Steering and brakes, delightfully neutral, and the ambience is relaxed and calm even in the most hideous traffic.

ADAS works well.

The driver’s seat massage is limited to pumping the lumbar support in and out, but is still good for a relaxing back stretch.

I’m a generously proportioned, 6’ bloke of a certain age, and the driver’s door/seat/steering wheel take careful negotiation to enter or leave. In other words, I’m porky and the egress is tight.

Fast DC charging is up to 100kw and takes half an hour to fill up (on average).

Compact size makes parking very easy, but the reversing camera has the annoying Peugeot/Citroen system whereby a top-down view is built up as the car goes back. Most 3600 views provide a live view.

None the less, Jeep Avenger is brilliant for city work.

Conclusion:

Jeep Avenger faces stiff opposition from Chinese brands. Even with the price adjustments, legacy brands remain above Chinese prices by a considerable margin. Despite its size, Stellantis appears to be in the equally precarious position of Nissan and VW.

The drive away price according to the website for our Jeep Avenger Summit BEV is $67,015 for a car in New South Wales. Make no mistake, I adore the car, Jeep Avenger is a gorgeous thing that is fun to drive, but competition comes in 20k cheaper for a larger vehicle.
