Kia K4 Splits ANCAP Ratings: Five Stars for Most, Four for Base

The Kia K4 has been handed its ANCAP safety report card, and the grades are split. Most of the range aced the test with five stars, but the base S variant without the optional Safety Pack lagged behind with just four.

For Kia, it’s a case of history repeating. The old Cerato also offered differing levels of safety across grades, leaving buyers to navigate a minefield of spec sheets. Once again, consumers are being asked to pay extra for features that should really be standard.

The K4 Sport, Sport+, GT-Line, and S with Safety Pack ticked all the boxes. They were applauded for solid crash protection, strong crash avoidance technology, and a relatively low “aggressivity” risk to other vehicles. These are the cars fleet managers and private buyers alike can feel confident about.

The base S without the Safety Pack, however, tells another story. Its autonomous emergency braking system can’t detect or respond in T-bone intersection crashes, and its lane-keep assist fails to spot cars and motorcycles in the next lane. These omissions slashed its Safety Assist score by 13%, pulling the overall rating down. Vulnerable road user protection also dipped compared with higher trims.

ANCAP Chief Executive Carla Hoorweg was blunt: “In 2025, safety should not be treated as a pay-for option.” Her advice is simple—check carefully before you buy, because not all K4s are created equal. Her message to Kia is equally clear: safety shouldn’t be something added on like metallic paint or a leather pack.

Style-wise, the K4 isn’t universally considered attractive. Its bold lines divide opinion here at gaycarboys.com , much like a sequinned jumpsuit at Mardi Gras—some love it, some wish it stayed in the closet.
