Lando Norris Drives Full-Sized Lego McLaren – Silverstone

The LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive have really outdone themselves this time, taking on their most ambitious LEGO Technic challenge ever: building a full-size, fully drivable McLaren P1 from LEGO Technic pieces. And who better to push it to the limit than McLaren F1 driver, Lando Norris? He took on the ultimate challenge—navigating a lap of the legendary Silverstone racetrack in a LEGO replica. Yes, you read that right.

This incredible life-sized LEGO McLaren P1 is made from a staggering 342,817 LEGO Technic elements and weighs in at a solid 1,220kg. It even features fully functional steering, making it the first-ever LEGO Technic model that can tackle corners! The cherry on top? It’s powered by LEGO Technic Function batteries and an electric car battery, making it the most roadworthy LEGO model to date. Fancy that for a toy car!

The build process was no easy feat. A team of 23 experts from the LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive came together, clocking in 8,344 hours of combined design, engineering, and building time. In total, they used 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements to bring this iconic McLaren supercar to life. Talk about dedication!

With the car assembled and ready to roll, it was time for the grand finale: Lando Norris behind the wheel at Silverstone. As if it wasn’t impressive enough, this LEGO McLaren P1 handled the iconic track’s twists and turns, with Lando showing off its capabilities in style. McLaren’s deep connection to British motorsport makes Silverstone the perfect venue for this epic showdown.

Ben Gulliver, McLaren Automotive’s Test & Development Director, was floored by the build, saying, “Having worked on the original P1 programme, it’s amazing to see so many elements from the McLaren P1 brought to life by the LEGO Technic team. The car was an icon of its time, and this collaboration is all about inspiring future generations of designers and engineers to push the boundaries.”

Lukáš Horák, Senior Project Manager at LEGO, added, “This project is the latest in a long list of partnerships with McLaren. Their expertise was crucial in making this model as close to the real McLaren P1 as possible, turning a dream into reality.”

If you want to get your hands on a LEGO Technic McLaren P1 (well, the 1:8 version), it’s available online for £389.99 / €449.99 / $449.99.

This collaboration is a brilliant mash-up of engineering, creativity, and, of course, a bit of LEGO magic!
