Leapmotor B03X starts at $29,990 drive-away, $9,000 less than the B10 Style we reviewed.
Leapmotor B03X is a small electric SUV with 2 grades, Style and Design LR, both rear-wheel drive with LFP batteries. Style is $26,990 plus on-roads, or $29,990 drive-away. Design LR is $30,990, or $33,990 drive-away. Premium paint costs $990. Leapmotor calls the B03X the most affordable all-electric SUV in Australia. It’s in dealerships in November.
It’s a long way from Leapmotor’s C10, and our first drive was horrific. It had a psychotic on-road personality and nagged constantly, but horror of horrors, it launched without CarPlay. When it went back to Leapmotor, we were well shot of it. The much improved C10 is still around, most recently as the C10 AWD Sports+ special edition.
The B10 launched with almost all of the C10’s faults. OTA updates then added wireless and wired CarPlay and Android Auto, and fixed the wayward adaptive cruise and lane centring. By the time we reviewed the B10 Design LR, it was calm and quiet, and the cabin didn’t look or feel cheap. It’s the one I’d spend my own money on.

What the Extra $4,000 Buys
Design LR costs $4,000 more than the Style and gets 90km more WLTP range from a 13.2kWh bigger battery. It’s no quicker, with both doing 0-100km/h in 8.6sec. Design LR also adds
- TechnoLeather seats and a 6-way power driver’s seat
- Power-fold mirrors
- Front parking sensors and side collision sensors
- Multi-colour ambient lighting
Leapmotor quotes about 16 minutes for a 30-80% DC charge in optimal conditions. The cabin has 33 storage spaces, including a Leap Box in the rear, and the rear seats fold 60:40.
Every B03X gets LEAP Pilot Level 2 with 21 ADAS functions, including adaptive cruise, lane centring, traffic jam assist, and front and rear cross traffic alert with braking. The screens run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, and OTA updates are included.
Roadside assist and capped price servicing both last 8 years.
Leapmotor Doubled While Mazda Slid
Leapmotor sold 146 cars in September, up 105.6% on 71 a year earlier. Year to date it’s 1,168 against 452, up 158.4%, for 0.1% of the market.
See our September sales story for more on the unfolding lambasting of legacy brands. Electric outsold petrol for the month, 26,087 to 26,018 with Tesla counted, and petrol sales fell 36.2%.
Mazda went the other way, with 5,702 cars in September, down 18.9% on 7,034, to be down 16.2% year to date at 58,865.
To add a little context, Leapmotor is a joint venture with 51% for Stellantis and Leapmotor with 49%. Mazda 6e is a rebadged and reskinned Changan Deepal, and comes via the 50:50 partnership, Mazda Changan. Like Leapmotor, the Mazda Changan venture was formed to produce an EV fast, and cheap. China can manage in 18 months what legacy brands take 4 or 5 years to do, and can make it cheaper, at a lower cost, and of equal of better quality.
Partnerships with Chinese makers may be the only way forward for legacy brands if they don’t wish to go the way of Holden and every defunct brand before it. Many hundreds of brands have ceased to be, but never has the change been so fast..
