Mazda Australia has reshuffled the deck, appointing long-serving team member Daniel Wakelam as its new National Manager, Product and Business Strategy, effective immediately. This brand-new executive role combines product strategy, business planning, and compliance with Australia’s recently introduced New Vehicle Efficiency Standards (NVES).
Wakelam’s promotion is a nod to nearly two decades of Mazda devotion, including pivotal roles in Sales Promotion, Product Planning, and Sales Strategy. With the ink barely dry on the NVES legislation – which took effect on July 1 – Wakelam’s new remit will see him steer Mazda’s local direction through the lens of efficiency, market competitiveness, and budget management.
“I’ve helped bring some of Mazda’s most beloved models to market,” said Wakelam. “Now, I’m excited to align all my experience to ensure ongoing success across each model’s lifecycle – from planning and launch, to day-to-day performance.”

Wakelam will also be the new go-to for media engagement, meaning we’ll likely see him popping up in press briefings and product launches with insights into Mazda’s evolving Aussie strategy – no doubt including electric plans, given Mazda’s relatively quiet stance on full electrification compared to its competitors.
Jarrod Gieschen, Director of Sales and Marketing, praised the appointment: “Daniel has been a key adviser for almost 20 years. This promotion is well-earned, and he’s already primed to lead this crucial part of the business.”
With increased pressure on carmakers to meet new emissions targets, Wakelam’s role is more than just internal logistics – it’s the heartbeat of Mazda’s next chapter. Expect more visibility, sharper compliance strategies, and hopefully, a few spicy model updates along the way.
