Mazda 6e brings 400V and Conservative Style to 2026

Mazda 6e: Electric, Elegant, and a Little Familiar

Mazda is stepping up its electric game in Australia with the 6e, a sleek all-electric liftback hitting mid-2026. Built on the EPA1 EV platform, it blends classic Jinba Ittai driver engagement with zero-emission swagger. Save the planet and look fabulous doing it.

Mazda’s tie-up with Changan Automobile has produced something unexpectedly delicious: a five-door grand tourer that feels part luxury GT, part eco-statement. Under that sculpted bonnet (frunk, if you like) sits a 78 kWh LFP battery, rear-wheel drive, and 190 kW of power. WLTP range: 500+ km—plenty for a Sydney-to-Canberra jaunt, or a cheeky detour via a winery or three. 500km is more likely to be more like 430 though, right? A little behind the opposition, sure, but let’s wait for the price before we judge.

Performance & Handling: Playful, Composed, Mazda-Perfect

  • 0–100 km/h: 7.6 sec
  • Top speed: 175 km/h
  • Drive: Rear-wheel drive
  • Adaptive suspension: Keeps corners smooth
  • Steering: Crisp, precise, and gloriously Mazda

It won’t beat an IM by MG, which does 0–100 in 3.2 sec, has 4WD, 4-wheel steer, and 400 kW charging at $80k drive-away with a 7-year warranty. But the 6e’s price has to reflect its place in the market—premium, playful, and worth every cent, so will it?

Design: Kodo, But Brooding

The 6e’s “Kodo: Soul of Motion” design has matured into something sleek, subtle, and a little broody. Five-door liftback? Check. Tesla Model 3 competitor? Sure—but with more warmth and less Scandi aloofness. Inside, digital screens meet traditional craftsmanship in that quietly confident Mazda way. It whispers “premium” without yelling.

Tech Byte: 400 V, 200 kW, and Why It Matters

  • DC Fast-Charging: Up to 200 kW, 10–80% in ~24 min (~300 km range)
  • AC Charging: 11 kW, perfect for overnight top-ups
  • Real-world range: Cold mornings: 280–325 km | Mild: up to 560 km

Rear-drive fun + low centre of gravity = handling that feels playful but composed. If friends gasp about missing 800 V? Smile: “I like my electrons well-behaved, thank you.”

Mazda vs History: Don’t Sleep on Petronalia

Mazda calls the 6e a “watershed moment,” but Japanese car makers dragged their heels for years. Koreans are streets ahead. Remember Holden? Once 50% of the market, now just faded signage in petronalia auctions.
