CUPRA’s Tavascan, unveiled as a concept car in 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, made its world premiere in Berlin, as Cupra’s second electric car, joining CUPRA Born in the lineup.
CUPRA Design Director Jorge Diez, thought of his early sketches, that it might not be to everyone’s tastes: “When you want to create something unique, when you want to create a strong personality, you can’t please everyone. That would mean losing your identity. And that’s not what we do at CUPRA” says Diez, adding “as designers, we’re obliged to push the boundaries without thinking about what people might say, to follow our own way. That’s exactly what we did with the CUPRA Tavascan. It’s not a response to change; it’s the vehicle that creates it.”
Although CUPRA is brand unknown to many, it is an off-shoot of SEAT, a Volkswagen brand. It started as SEAT’s performance arm, as Polestar did with Volvo. Like Polestar, CUPRA was thought sufficiently important to be made a stand-alone range. Gay men love a badge, right? Is CUPRA enough to win us over? It certainly looks the business, that’s for sure.

Diez went on to say, “The front dark mask gives it a sporty, unique identity, coupled with the progressive sculptural V-shaped bonnet design. Together they create a powerful feeling of tension” . CUPRA Tavascan has a distinctive look to the face, with a three-triangle eye signature in the headlamp. “They’re the new brand icon which, together with the illuminated logo for the first time, show the strong identity of CUPRA.”
The CUPRA Tavascan SUV electric Coupé is seen by the company as its future design design-wise.
CUPRA claims that the cabin is even more striking. The interior design centres around a spine. “For us it’s a piece of art that’s never been seen before, the most iconic piece of this interior that shows the skeleton that supports the entire dashboard to create a sculptured, futuristic interior” says Diez. “These elements maximise the feeling of space in the cabin and, combined with the progressive ambient light, create a unique and characterful design language. Every time we finally unveil a new model to the public is a very special moment for us. It’s a dream come true after so much hard work. Simply amazing” he concluded.
There is no doubt that the EV world is a space ripe for the picking. CUPRA has some tough competition with most brands looking at the segment, and many already having examples on offer. From the pictures, CUPRA Tavascan looks to be a sexy thing with a well laid out cabin. Let us see if what is delivered lives up to the looks on paper.
