There is something nostalgic and deeply sexy about an Italian convertible, especially a Maserati. The brand new GranCabrio follows the GranTurismo coupe, comes in Trofeo trim, and has a Nettuno twin turbo 3.0L engine.
GT cars, whether open top or not, need a bit of grunt to cross the country in style. GranCabrio’s 542hp (398kw) output is the most powerful yet for the range, and should be good for hours at a single stretch. A GT car should make the driver want to stay behind the wheel. In fact, it should have the owners inventing excuses to fire it up even if only to take it around the block.
For better or for worse, the age of folding tin-tops is over. Designers are back to a traditional ragtop which allows for more space in the boot. The GranCabrio’s multi-layer fabric roof folds in 14 seconds at speeds up to 50kph.

ABOVE: 2024 Maserati GranCabrio
The GranCabrio tradition started in Geneva at the 1959 motor show with the convertible 3500 GT. Like all Maseratis before it, the GranCabrio is for the well-heeled who love an impeccably tailored suit, an elegant cocktail, and a winter in the snow fields. They want their car’s classic lines to age gracefully.
Like its roofed sibling, GranCabrio has all the latest safety and driver aids and an interior that is beautiful and luxurious and not afraid to show its true colours.
Maserati expects GranCabrio owners to spend time in the open air, summer or winter. To the end, the roof, lowered from a button or from the centre display, has acoustic layers that still allow the subtle patter of rain to be heard while keeping the water outside where it belongs. There is a wind stopper that is manually unfolded and set behind the front seats, and keeps wind turbulence away from expensive hair dos. For chilly nights, the front seats have a neck warmer that wafts gentle comforting breaths at neck height.
Is it my imagination, or does the infotainment system and driver display look to have been nicked from Audi?
Not only is GranCabrio bristling with the latest technology, but craftsman proud of their work, have detailed the interior with finishing touches like an analogue clock sitting amid acres of buttery leather. The carbon fibre trim, delicious stitching, sumptuous seats, and quality fittings, give the cabin the classy feel of an exclusive gentlemen’s club.
There is a certain something that Italian cars have always had; stunning looks and fab performance are only part of the equation.
