2026 MG U9 EV Tows 3,500kg And Australia Gets It First

MG U9 EV is an electric dual-cab making 325kW/700Nm, with 430km of WLTP range and a 3,500kg braked towing rating, and Australia is the first market in the world to launch it. The price is to be advised.

For some unknown reason, Australia goes first again, and this time it’s with a ute that plugs in. MG designed and tested the U9 EV here, and no other market gets it before we do. Dual motors and all-wheel drive make 325kW/700Nm, fed by a 102.2kWh LFP battery with 430km WLTP. It’ll do 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds, in a ute with a tray big enough to take a standard pallet.

To give this some perspective, the U9 Black Edition went on sale here before anywhere else at $57,990 drive-away. It used a 2.5-litre turbo diesel, a ZF 8-speed auto, and the same 3,500kg towing rating. W got locally developed multi-link independent rear suspension where most dual-cabs have old style suspension that goes lumpy and skittish the minute the tub is empty. MG U9 EV goes further again with full-function four-wheel Electronic Air Suspension.

MG U9 EV Tows 3,500kg And Charges At 115kW

Braked towing is 3,500kg, unbraked is 750kg, and payload is 685kg. DC charging peaks at 115kW, with 20-80% quoted at about 42 minutes. AC is capped at 11kW. The 430km on the window sticker will shrink hard the moment a trailer is on the towbar, exactly as it does with every other electric tow vehicle.

The frunk holds 236L, which takes the charging cables and an Esky without robbing the tub. The tub itself swallows a standard pallet. V2L gives you 6.6kW out of the CCS2 socket, plus another 3 outlets of 2.2kW each inside the cabin. A compressor and a coffee machine can both be going while the ute is parked up. Diesel dual-cabs still need a generator in the tray to manage that.

The Price MG Hasn’t Named

Prices and further specification details to follow. Whatever the number turns out to be, MG will undercut the legacy brands as it, and other Chinese brands, have become famous for. That business model has been sweeping the globe, but we watched it play out this month when BYD cut the ATTO 1 Essential to $19,990 drive-away, making it the cheapest new car in the country. Cheap EVs were impossible, we were told, for about a decade. Then a Chinese brand built one and priced it at $19,990. The diesel U9 Black Edition costs $57,990 drive-away, and that’s the only MG ute figure anyone has to anchor against. That is still pretty pricey, but a snip when compared to legacy brands.

MG now has the volume to make that pace increase. Parent company SAIC pushed past 2 million sales in the first half of 2026, the first Chinese carmaker to manage it. The ute aisle was the last big slice of this market MG hadn’t taken a swing at before the recent MG U9. Now that diesel U9 will have an electric stable mate, and both of them started here first.

MG marketing director Dimitri Andreatidis called it a ute that “brings together the capability and utility people expect from a ute with the comfort and benefits of an electric powertrain”. Being the first market globally to launch MG U9 EV “is also a significant milestone for MG and reflects the importance of Australia to our business”, he said. Head of product Meng Chen said it “gives customers the option to move to an electric ute without giving up the utility and flexibility they expect from the segment”.

Screens, Massage, And A Tailgate That Opens Itself

Dual 12.3-inch screens, leather front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 15W wireless charging, and an 8-speaker JBL stereo. The driver’s seat is heated and ventilated, with a massage function. The front passenger makes do with heating, as does the steering wheel. There’s a hands-free automatic tailgate and a 360-degree camera, for both car park and fire trail. MG U9 EV scored a 5-star ANCAP rating.
