June 2026 sales figures show Toyota holding the top brand spot over BYD by just 243 deliveries. Here is the unvarnished look at the real top ten.
The June 2026 sales figures highlight a structural shift in the Australian automotive market. This change is driven by rapid electrification and shifting consumer values.
The industry reporting structure is currently undergoing a transparency crisis. According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) VFACTS reporting system, the new-vehicle market set a monthly record in June with 131,134 registered vehicle deliveries. However, because major electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers like Tesla and Polestar resigned from the lobby group in 2024 over vehicle emissions disputes, the official VFACTS data contains a blind spot.
By counting only the brands that choose to feed data into their database, the FCAI report crowned the Ford Ranger as the highest-selling model for the month with 5,999 sales. But, add in the data from Electric Vehicle Council, a different reality emerges on the forecourt. For the true state of the market, the comprehensive top ten merges both datasets to reflect what Australians are really buying. Neither Polestar nor Tesla are mentioed, leaving FCAI figures inaccurate to say the least.
FCAI is like a union for carmakers, and the biggest contributors have the biggest sway. Toyota wanted hybrids pushed hard, suggesting that electric cars were not there yet. June caused a rumble at FCAI HQ as they walked back the EV rhetoric a notch or two.
Interestingly, Tesla charges buyers for features almost all other car makers include int he sticker price. More about the subscription fiasco in the next story, but here are the tables of sorry for some.

When the data is integrated, the Tesla Model Y emerges as the number-one vehicle in the country, absolutely flogging Ford Ranger by 2,073 units. Yet, this Model Y missing from the primary headline rankings.
The brand leaderboard reveals a slimmer margin at the top. Incoming new-energy vehicles are challenging the legacy boys club faster than anticipated, and quite against predictions by some. We anticipate BYD will overtake Toyota, and the Germans, Japanese, and Koreans will slide. Stellantis brands may even disappear altogether, following the decision by Inchcape to delete Peugeot from their portfolio. Stallentis is shopping around for another importer but may have to do the job themselves or abandon the brand completely..

Toyota kept number-one spot in the country by a mere 243 vehicles over BYD. In a total record market of 140,058 deliveries, a margin of 243 units is a sliverish 0.17% difference. BYD total of 18,881 marks the highest number achieved by any new brand in decades, backed by a 131.5% year-on-year increase.
This market shift stems from two different commercial realities. Legacy brands allow extended vehicle backlogs, high dealer delivery fees, and premium pricinf, and buyers are beomcing less happy about the wait, cost, and equipment. Conversely, incoming manufacturers use a rapid-supply model,using their own cargo ships to deliver cars to local ports and clear backlogs instantly. Poor old Toyota had to scramble to get another 10,000 cars, truck, and SUVs to make them look a little less complacent.
The technology has also evolved. BYD’s “Super Hybrid” DM-i powertrain slightly embarrasses the traditional hybrid engineering approach. While legacy platforms use a petrol engine with a small electric assistant, the DM-i system operates as a direct electric drive. It uses a single-speed highway clutch and an internal engine that acts as a generator. This allows everyday commuters 80 to 100 kilometres on home electricity before turning on the fuel tap, answering consumer demand for running-cost insulation amidst global energy price changes caused by Tramup’s insane war.
The data from June confirms that the era of uncontested legacy dominance has drawn to a close.
