The upcoming smart #5 is gunning for a late 2025 launch in Australia, and it’s doing it with its headlights held high. This isn’t your inner-city hatch with a bubbly badge—this is a fully electric, mid-size SUV with legitimate off-road chops, and it’s proudly carrying a new label: “Styled by Mercedes-Benz.”
In case you missed the memo, smart has had a glow-up. Now co-owned by Geely and Mercedes-Benz, the brand is flexing its Euro credentials across the board. The smart #1 and #3, already on sale in Australia since late 2024, bring upscale design, tech-laden cabins, and proper EV credentials. But the new #5? It’s bolder, bigger, and far more outdoorsy—think less café run, more coastal road trip.
First teased at an immersive Byron Bay media event last year (naturally), the #5 was introduced alongside Mercedes-Benz Chief of Design for smart, Kai Sieber, who described the design language as “love, pure and unexpected.” Translation?
