SUV or Wagon? Why Are Passenger Cars Dying?

We’ve been inundated with an email about whether or not someone should buy an SUV or a wagon.

“I want to sit high,” he said. “I don’t like SUVs,” he said. “I want lots of space,” he said. I think most people know what they want, they just want reassurance. However, this boy didn’t know if it was 2.30 or January.

Here are a couple of things to consider:

Space – how much of it do you need? Are you a camper or a shopper? Maybe you want to dump a load in your back space. Have you got wet suits and scuba gear to consider. If you have camping accoutrements and muddy things, do you want them on pristine carpet.

Use – We’ve covered some of that already but let’s go further: buy a car for your lifestyle, not the lifestyle think you have. You may think you’re Bear Grilles, but the lifestyle is probably more Yogi Bear, with a loaded basket being the biggest load you’ll take on.

ABOVE: SUV VS Wagon

Size – size counts, always. Anyone who says otherwise is telling porkies, right? Bigger is better, or is it? It isn’t the size of your stick, but rather it is about how you use it. If you don’t carry loads of stuff, and there are only one or two of you, go small.

Power – Power has always been an issue. Some want warp 9.9, and others want towing grunt. If you’re not going to tow, and most of us don’t, think about economy. Even if you’re filthy stinking rich, one day, a 20L/100k stonker might not work well for you. I found that this week as I cruised past the lines of punters paying $250 a litre. My EV plugged into a station sourcing power only from greens sources.

Regardless of all those points, and despite the fact that a passenger car drives better than an SUV, most of you will choose the latter.

This week we’re in a Golf Life wagon, and although it is no raving beauty, it drives like a limo. VW’s Tiguan also drives well, but feature for feature, costs more.

So, let’s get back to our reader who has since selected his new ride. He took our advice, and since he needed neither space nor height, he has opted for a new tesla Model 3. In other words, he got something not previously considered. He took into account his ability to charge at home, and the fact that he has massive solar arrays on his roof. He travels 60km a day, and loathes camping in anything but a Hilton. All his holidays are done by big silver bird.

Well done you.

As buyers continue to abandon passenger cars, some passenger cars survive because of their unique position in the market place. In short, for most of us a wagon is a better choice, but the more to SUVs seems unstoppable and is more about fashion than function
