Tesla Model 3, Kia EV3, MG S5 EV Score Five-Star ANCAP Ratings

The most recent round of ANCAP safety assessments has awarded five-star safety ratings to three prominent electric vehicles: the updated Tesla Model 3, the all-new Kia EV3, and the incoming MG S5 EV. Each model demonstrated a strong commitment to occupant protection, pedestrian safety, and crash avoidance, reinforcing their appeal in the competitive EV market.

The updated Tesla Model 3, covering vehicles built from September 2023 onwards, achieved a 90% Adult Occupant Protection score and a record-breaking 95% for Child Occupant Protection — the highest yet under the 2023–2025 ANCAP protocols. The refreshed model introduces a centre airbag for far-side impact protection and an active bonnet system designed to reduce pedestrian injuries. With standout scores of 89% for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 88% for Safety Assist, the Model 3 continues to set the benchmark for electric sedan safety.

Joining Kia’s growing EV line-up, the Kia EV3 small SUV also secured a five-star result, with an 83% Adult and 86% Child Occupant Protection score. Despite a few Adequate and Marginal ratings in the frontal offset test, the EV3 delivered Good results in side and full-width impacts. Its AEB system showed strong performance across a wide range of scenarios, including pedestrian, cyclist, and motorcyclist detection.

The MG S5 EV, set to launch in Australia in May 2025 and New Zealand in July, also earned a five-star rating, scoring 90% for Adult and 86% for Child Occupant Protection. It features a full suite of driver assistance technologies, including fatigue monitoring, speed assistance, and reverse AEB. While its motorcycle AEB response was rated Marginal, its protection for other vulnerable road users was solid, earning 82% in that category, and 79% for Safety Assist.

These results underscore the maturing safety performance of electric vehicles across price points, with mainstream models delivering protection that rivals — and sometimes exceeds — that of luxury competitors. For families, commuters, and tech-savvy drivers alike, safety is no longer a compromise in the shift to EVs.
