ABOVE: Some of the Top Ten Tech
1: AEB
Autonomous Emergency Braking could literally save your life. It won’t bend over to give you the kiss of life, but it might well eliminate the need for someone else to do it! As the name suggests, the car monitors surroundings and will slam on the anchors to prevent banging into someone’s bum.
Some clever cars even have it in reverse for those who parking is a curse over which one cannot conquer.
2: Active Lane Departure
Not to be confused with Lane Centering, Lane Departure will warn you with a noise and some serious stick-shaking. If you tarry on your tempestuous trajectory, the steering wheel will magically move to guide you gently put things right.
3: Active Blind Spot Monitor
By now, you’re all familiar with the little flashing lights on the side mirrors of cars. What you might now know is that it now works with the Lane Departure system. It there is something you’ve missed when doing your due diligence, the steering will intervene. This should protect motorcyclists, as they always come off worst in a disagreement with other road users.
4: Check Your Back Seat Warning.
At first the hardly seems worthy of mention in such esteemed company, but what it the thing you’ve forgotten is a baby seat, or an errant teenager. Admittedly you may wish to leave that latter in the car to get a bit of peace and quiet.
5: Smart Entry and Start
Most cars that have this nifty feature allows drivers to keep their keys secreted about their person. The driver simply touches the doorhandle or presses a button, but phone apps have opened a new door. Now, some can use their phones as keys. Not only that, you can allow someone else to access your car remotely. You may even be able to allow someone to drive the car if you need the car moved but are at 10,000 metres.
6: Centre Airbags
This is the new word du jour. A centre airbag is between the front seats and stops heads butting each other if the unforeseen eventuates.
7: Wireless Apple CarPlay
Before you lose your bottle over CarPlay VS Android Auto, save it.
Once you had to tether your trusty phone to the car via USB. Some brands now offer an additional option, wireless. This is an innovation once used, is hard to do without. What’s more, it saves you faffing about with the infotainment screen. Touching that screen is as bad as using a phone while driving.
8: Seat Cooling:
We’ve all heard of seat heating, but now you have the option of cooling wafts of air up the Khyber .
Now, your nethers will tingle with the joy of a summer breeze at the touch of a button.
9: Satellite tracking.
You might not like the idea of your every whim being on display, but you’ll change your mind once a couple of chaps nick your car. I guess that makes them a Pair of Knickers!
10: Hybrid and Electric drives.
This is a techno-soap to wash away your sins. Zero emissions are oft-lampooned words most of us love to hate. The beauty of them is they can be charged from 100% renewable power, and until you’ve tried an electric car, don’t knock it. If you can’t manage that big of a suck, try a hybrid as a baby step into the 21st century.
Conclusion:
Some of these can be switched off or not used, while others are part of the DNA of the car. The most annoying of our top ten is the lane centering, which is instructive and unreliable, no matter the brand. It doesn’t always place the car where you want it, and it tends to randomly switch off. It is part of our top tip tech list we love to hate.
One thing is sure, our carefully curated cast makes road trips safer.
