Toyota’s decades-old decision to create a unique car with a “synergy” hybrid drive was wise in hindsight. Prius came to symbolise how ugly duckling’s owner felt about the environment at a time when it wasn’t fashionable to do so. Although almost all Toyota models now have a hybrid option in the range, even if only a mild one, it started with trailblazing Prius, a model that thankfully consigned to the auto dustbin.
The last month has been a telling one with RAV4 topping the sales charts in July with a record 5,933 sales, just above the record of 5,857 two months before.
Last month saw 12,686 Hybrid Electric (HEV) sales in total, another record for Toyota. Buyers are ever more sensitive to price movements and the volitivity at the petrol pump, one way or another. It is the second time that Toyota has sold 10,000 hybrids in a month, also the second time that hybrid powertrains outsold all other fuel types. 55.9% of the 22,705 July sales were hybrid, the highest ever number.

But I digress.
to return to the 5,933 RAV4s sold, 93.4%of those were hybrids. The hybrid sales alone make RAV4 Hybrid the best-selling vehicle for the month. This is the first time in a long time that either Hilux or Ranger has not been top dog. RAV4 had wait times of up to 18 months but apparently the boats have started rolling in.
Toyota switched to a hybrid-only range on many model lines range. Hybrids accounted for 94.5% of Camry, 96 % of Corolla sedan and hatch, 99.4% of Corolla Cross, and 86.6% of Kluger sales.
Toyota points out that the 12,686 hybrid sales alone outsold Ford at number 2 with 7,749 sales by nearly 50 per cent.
Adding 92 sales of the electric bZ4X, and 2 Mirai fuel-cell electric sedans, Toyota claims 56.3% of vehicle sales with electric or part electric drivetrains.
Toyota dominates the Australian market with a 22.8% market share for the month. Top sellers include:
- HiLux (4,747)
- Corolla hatch and sedan (2,658)
- Kluger (1,705)
- Camry (1,498)
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operation Sean Hanley said, “Achieving a hybrid sales record for the second time this year shows just how much our customers value our fuel-saving technology, and it’s a testament to our dealer network who have been working around the clock to get vehicles delivered to customers,” Mr Hanley said.
“With supply levels stabilising, we’ve also seen how popular the RAV4 is with Australians, who appreciate the amenity, signature reliability and powertrain smoothness that our best-selling SUV offers.”
