Volkswagen Amarok Gats 5 Star ANCAP Rating

Unless you live under a rock, you’ll know by now that Ford Ranger and the next generation Volkswagen Amarok are sister models. Had the deal not been struck with Ford, Volkswagen Amarok would have been discontinued. Following in the footsteps of the similarly equipped Ford, Volkswagen Amarok now has a 5-star ANCAP rating.

As with most other vehicles evaluated over the last few years, Volkswagen Amarok  is assessed against 2020-2022 criteria. Volkswagen Amarok’s ANCAP rating is based on that of the Ford Ranger, with additional frontal offset (MPDB) and side impact tests conducted on the Amarok.

Volkswagen Amarok has standard dual frontal, side chest-protecting and side head-protecting curtain airbags, as well as a driver and passenger knee airbag. A centre airbag protects front occupants from hitting each other during a side impact.

A range of Good and Adequate scores seen in crash tests with adult dummies,  but it was noted that in other areas, marginal performance was seen.

Volkswagen Amarok had good levels of protection in the two Child Occupant Protection crash tests, and was awarded full points.

NOTE: Volkswagen Amarok does not have a top tether for child restraints in the centre seat.

As with most LCV’s such a Ford Ranger and Amarok, there is an increased risk to occupants of oncoming vehicles in a crash, and a 3.57 point ‘compatibility’ penalty was applied.

Volkswagen Amarok collision avoidance responds to pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles in forward and turning scenarios. Volkswagen Amarok recorded good scores in emergency lane keeping, lane keep assist, car-to-car autonomous emergency braking (AEB) tests, and car-to-cyclist AEB tests. Car-to-pedestrian AEB tests saw Adequate performance.

“The dual cab ute segment is always very competitive, and this five-star rating now elevates the VW Amarok in line with its contemporary peers,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Ms Carla Hoorweg.
