Volvo ES90 Execu-Hatch, Norse-Blessed, Leads Sydney EV Showcase

Volvo Car Australia staged a Scandi-chic showcase in Sydney, rolling out its electrified line-up with a mix of tech, wit, and a touch of Norse theatre.

At centre stage was the all-new ES90 execu-hatch, a premium fastback that looks like the S90 sedan went on a romantic weekend with a Polestar 2. Built on the SPA2 platform shared with EX90 and Polestar 3, it’s priced at $88,880 for the Plus Single Motor and $107,990 for the Ultra Single Motor.

Australia gets the rear-drive version only, despite dual-motor options overseas. It comes with 800-volt charging, promising lightning-fast top-ups once the infrastructure catches up—so basically, the power is ready, if the plugs are.

The very first ES90 will go to Volvo Car Australia MD Stephen Connor, instantly elevating his driveway to mythical status. According to Volvo lore, the pre-production car on display was hand-built by nimble Vahallan maidens and transported by Odin himself, making a pitstop in Sydney courtesy of ancient Nordic logistics. Even Thor’s Hammer might have winked at the headlights.

Also unveiled was the EX30 Cross Country, Volvo’s first SUV to wear the CC badge. Taller than its hatchback sibling, it wears rugged cladding and a topographical map grille, perfect for weekend adventurers who want to hint at off-road prowess without leaving Wi-Fi range. Meanwhile, the dual-motor EX30 quietly bows out of the local range.

Volvo confirmed the EX90 SUV will gain 800-volt charging in 2026, while XC60 and XC90 have received subtle styling tweaks and hybrid drivetrains. The XC60 remains Volvo’s best-seller, proving Australians love a practical Swede—especially if it comes with mood lighting and a hint of drama.

On the tech front, Volvo rolled out its updated Android Automotive OS, featuring self-learning AI, over-the-air updates, and sharper UX. It’s smart enough to know your habits, but mercifully doesn’t nag like an ex.

Volvo doubled down on its electrified future: three EVs, two PHEVs, and hybridised XC models, with no new petrol-only cars in sight. Think smörgåsbord, but powered by lithium instead of herring.

Driving the refreshed XC60 and XC90 revealed interiors that remain spa-day Scandi: pale timbers, natural light, and tiny Swedish flags tucked into trim. Step inside and you half expect cucumber water and a gentle reminder to inhale deeply.

Volvo also leaned on its safety-first heritage. From giving away the three-point seatbelt in 1959 to offering lifetime parts warranties today, the brand insists it’s building more than cars—it’s building a Volvo family. With the ES90 execu-hatch at the helm, it’s a family gathering where even Odin might want a test drive.
