Normally, a weekend at the Farm doesn’t rate a mention, but our latest trip was one made for sports car lovers.
Our BRZ review is upcoming, meanwhile imagine 6 boys spread across one modern classic, and 2 classic-classics. We headed for the Hunter Region cottage enclave in: a 2023 Subaru BRZ, a ’65 Ford Mustang that is in “original” condition (needs love), and a mint Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda. The ‘Stang and Pagoda belong to Max and his mum and rarely get outings. It seemed only fair to stretch their legs for a bit.
We tagged-teamed each car for obvious reasons. No one wanted to miss out on the Pagoda, and Max’s Mustang smells like a petrol station at the best of times.
The BRZ, with 175kw, has more power than either of the classics. That’s quiet a feat considering the brawny V8 mustang had 168kw from factory, and the Pagoda straight 6 with a little less, at 132kw, were powerful for their time. Oh, how far we’ve come.

For the record, the trip takes around 2 and a half hours if we don’t take the scenic route. After a blatt down the highway, we convened at the local pub in town for a light lunch. The compound is only 20 minutes away by leisurely back roads, and we needed a boozer for supplies before heading in. While we scoffed down a couple of Ploughman’s, we talked about the trip.
Here’s what the boys thought:
Alan:
BRZ is worth a look. Its pretty little body sits on a great-handling chassis. Ride is firm, but taken by the scruff of the neck, BRZ loves a corner. The tail always feels like its only a second from breaking away, such is the rear-wheel-drive feeling.
Unlike many sports cars, BRZ feels alive, old school, a driver’s car. An STI version with a blower of some kind would be fab. I’d also like to see another couple of cogs on the auto. It is a Toyota transmission, and Toyota has some rather good 8 and 10 speeds kicking about the joint.
The audio system sounds ok, but was a bit moody. The wired CarPlay kept disconnecting, and the DAB+ frequently lost signal. Buddha Hits (and the rest of the SYD1 range) had a habit of vanishing. A press of the preset would bring it back, but only for a moment.
Max:
She’s a pretty little filly. The saddle is firm, making the ride feel even firmer. Sadly, there is way too much highway noise for my liking. Maybe quieter tyres and a bit more sound proofing is wanted.
Like the firm steering and brakes that have the Goldilocks amount of feel.
Back seats are useless unless all those on board are under 5’.
Casper:
I like BRZ. It is frisky in the bends, and keen to please on the straights. It is about the only straight thing I do darling! We had the spare in the boot, which was full-sized, but had no cover. That’s fine while the tyre is clean, but imagine the LV bags being thrown in on top of a wheel that’s been in the muck? No thanks. You’d need a plakky blanket to cover it.
Love the looks, love the interior, but the stereo is a bit of a let down. Defs prefer the auto.
Ethan:
If you’re taller, you might struggle a bit to get in and out. I have to roll out like Patsy on a bender. I knocked the noggin getting in too.
It’s got a great driving position, with the seat low, and the steering wheel just in the sweet spot. The blind spot is handy, but no active steering, or if there was, we couldn’t find the setting.
I love gadgets, and the infotainment interface was simple, but it’s a shame they couldn’t cram in the 14 incher from WRX.
The Subaru flat four has a gorgeous sound that is unmistakable. We have a shagged Brumby on the farm. We keep abusing it, and it keeps coming back for more. You’d never get it registered, but Subarus just won’t die.
Nicco:
I love old Italian sports cars, and there is more than a little of that Spirit in BRZ. I’m really getting in to EVs, so a blatt in new petrol cars is a blast. There are just enough fancy bits to keep us happy, but not so many that you feel like you’re being driven in a laptop by a gamer. I hate that feeling.
The throaty engine note could be throatier, and although I love shift-em-ya’self gear boxes, a good automatic is great for city stuff. I spend a bit of time on autobahns and autostradas, and I could imagine sticking my foot to the floor in a BRZ, and leaving it there for the day.
I’m more of a “cruise along the Riviera” than “a flog around the Nürburgring” kind of guy. Sans sunroof, I could still see myself alongside the Med with the windows down.
Raffie:
As long as there is room for a gym bag, I’m happy. I like a manual, but can’t be arsed in traffic. 2 pedals are enough for town.
The high beam was a bit psycho though. I kept flashing truckies, which is fine if you want their digits, but not so great if they’re straight. Am I right?
The back seat is good for gym gear and that’s about it. Nicco and I tried getting in the back just for shits and giggles, but christ on a cracker, who the hell is going to actually want to ride back up in there? We were wearing our knees as ear rings!
Now I come to think of it, it reminds me of mum’s old Stag, except the BRZ always goes when you press the accelerator.
For the record, Max’s Mustang is a bit shit, especially when you put it beside something that doesn’t look like a dumpster fire.
Al’s review is out in a jiff, so keep your mincers peeled.
