Toyota released details of the upcoming next-generation Camry that has a few surprises.
The all-hybrid range has a new look design, better handling and extra features. The biggest change will be that all Camrys will use the latest 2.5-litre fifth-generation hybrid-electric (HEV) powertrain. It combines the engine’s output with lighter and more compact electric motors, providing more power and extra pep. The new system is made more economical by reducing revs at lower speeds, and providing extra power from the hybrid’s battery. Not only is it using less fuel, the sedan has better acceleration, and more torque.
Handling has been improved with retuned suspension that improves responsiveness, stability and over-all on-road comfort.
Camry appeals to a wide range of drivers, including LGBTI buyers. The sedan is big enough for a family, but small enough for just one. The hybrid economy appeals to eco-gays, and leather upholstery speaks for itself, right?
Australian Camrys come exclusively from Japan, and is expected in showrooms in the second half of next year. Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing & Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the global adoption of hybrid-electric technology for Camry reflected overwhelming consumer demand, including in Australia. “Moving exclusively to a hybrid Camry clearly signals the ongoing success of Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to helping customers lower their carbon footprint through electrification while leaving no-one behind,” Mr Hanley said.

Camry has been a favourite with buyers for decades, and as the world transitions from fossil fuels and passenger cars, we are looking at what will possibly be Toyota’s last new petrol-powered passenger car. Toyota has steadfastly refused to acknowledge a world-wide push to electric-only powertrains. Whether it is because of their investment in hybrid technology, or Japan’s lagging renewable sector, we can expect fewer fossil-fuelled Toyota news releases.
