What Vehicles Are Best Sellers in Australia, and Worldwide?

That is 14.7 % up on July last year, smashing the 92,754 set in 2017.

 

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said that the July 2023 result was an indication that the market continued to recover from supply shortages resulting from COVID plant shutdowns, microprocessor shortages and logistics and shipping bottlenecks.

 

“During the past twelve months the issue has been one of securing supply for consumers, however as these pressures ease, we are starting to see a return to more stable market conditions,” Mr Weber said.

 

“Many of these vehicles were ordered several months ago, so it is important to monitor the broader economic conditions through 2023 and their impact on private and business demand. Mr Weber added that sales in the passenger vehicle segment remained at an historically low level, however many of these sales have transitioned into the SUV category.

 

“Passenger vehicles now represent 17.7 % of the market in July while the SUV category now sits at 58.9 %.  However, contrary to widely held opinion, not all SUVs are large vehicles as 75 % of SUV sales are in the medium, small and light categories.”

 

Electric and hybrid vehicles increased by 17.9 % with pure electric accounting for a staggering 7.0 % of July sales. A stunning result given the way in which zero emissions cars were ridiculed by the previous governments for a decade. 15,853 new vehicles came from China, an increase of 130.1 % over July 2022.

  • New South Wales 11.3 % (29,516)
  • Queensland 4.3 % (19,719)
  • South Australia 17.0 % (6,612)
  • Tasmania 33.9 % (1,777)
  • Victoria 22.7 % (27,097)
  • Western Australia 21.6 % (9,797)
  • Northern Territory 19.4 % (903).

  • Toyota 19,191
  • Mazda 8,307
  • Ford (7,109)
  • Hyundai (6,521)
  • Kia (6,150).

The Top 5 Vehicles:

  • Ford Ranger 5,143 sales
  • Toyota Hi-Lux (4,670)
  • MG ZS (3,852)
  • Tesla Model Y (3,330)
  • Toyota RAV4 (2,750).

While the market seems to have recovered from the Covid era, the world is heading for uncertain times, and discretionary spending is the first to be cut back. There are important things to consider in this report, namely, the availability of vehicles. Some models have wait times as long as 18 months.

While many claim the Tesla Model Y is the world’s best selling car, Statista shows that the Toyota Corolla, Rav4, and Ford F series, take up the top 3 spots.

Interestingly, Chinese models do not feature on that international scale. North America is Toyota’s top market, selling even more than in Japan.

Even more interesting is the Ford F series which is the best selling “light truck model series” in the USA and Canada, but sells little outside that market. That indicates that the North American is still the primary driver for car design.

RAV4 is America’s top-selling SUV, so Toyota is doing something right.

Vehicle sales records are a murky record at best, it is the deliveries that really count. Why? Some people won’t wait, buying another model instead.
